Title says it all, I have never seen these models on a table before, and only lightly read some state block a year ago when I first saw them. They any good? I play orks, so would they be of any compliment as a detachment, or does 8th not do that anymore, ( haven't gotten my hands on the 8th edition book yet.)

Mixing orks and any other army isn't going to work outside of open play (so no for matched and narrative).

They are pretty decent as a standalone army right now.

They're nicely in the mid range of armies I think. We've got no fliers and our infantry is a little fragile for 11p, but we've got good dakka and probably the best AA gun in the game on the dunecrawler.

I think we're lacking options a bit, as we've got nothing line heavy weapons teams and our melee specialists are all fairly weak. Not that I think we should have every option, but there are a lot of options tied up in melee specialists that aren't gonna be picked much, leaving us with a rather small pool of units that really work well together.

All that said, I still love the army. It plays a little different and the models are almost all brilliant.

I'm a believer in that puts too many of your eggs in one basket, easily tied up by even a single unit reaching melee. MSU Kastellans w/ some Onagers is the way to go.

Yeah, the Kastellan star is a wet dream that looks insane on paper, but it is way too easily countered. Right now I'm hoping to play a fully mechanised list, mostly to get some play out of my 8 dragoons\ballistari. Some Kastellans will definitely appear in that, but I don't really have high hopes of making it work since I won't be taking any foot soldiers. It'll look cool though, for sure.

Cawl
2 dunecrawlers w/arrays
2 kastelans w/triple phos
3 grav kataphrons
some skitarii to screen/score ruins
knight warden

pretty brutal. cawl is insanely good; he has good shooting, good cqc, and insane buffs. plus your army wide bonus is actually good. being able to choose, and then roll (cp, +/- with cawl).... nutso.

what did csm get... death to the false emperor. w00p.

yeah, this ed is all balanced, nice one geederps.

Good... shooting? His gun is 12". I've only used it in overwatch so far. If he wasn't in a foot slogging army and unable to get on any kind of transport in the ad mech, his cc would be amazing. As it is, he is a glorified mechanic, much too heavily focused on cc. You can slog him together with some Kastellans for a very heavy CC unit, but also one that basically any army can run circles around.

If you're getting him in another army for the CC, I'm fairly sure there are better choices.

Cawl is good, but is only insanely good if you ignore a lot of things. It's his effect on the Canticles that makes him worth his points. Not his very good CC that he never gets to use or his very strong gun that he never gets in range. If he were a CSM, I'm sure he'd be much better with the same stats for whatever reason that you see him as unbalanced, but in the ad mech he isn't.

Drop the Kataphrons and replace the Warden with a Crusader. Kataphrons are massively overshadowed by our far superior options, and are far too expensive for what they do.

Also, replace one array with a Neutron Laser.
