Does anyone own one of these and have an opinion on if it is worth it for 8th edition?

2x quad lasscannons seems brutal however only 20 wounds...

It's terrible. Not because of its rules per se, but because of the Relic rule, which states that you may never have more Relic units than non-Relic units in a single detachment. The Relic Spartan is a Lord of War with this rule. In practice, this means you need a detachment which can take 2+ Lords of War, which would be the Super-Heavy Detachment, and in that case you would have to take at least two non-relic LoW with the Spartan.

The only non-Relic LoW with the Space Marine faction are the Thunder Hawk, Thunder Hawk Transporter and the Stormbird, for 650, 420 651 points without weapons. It gets a bit cheaper with IG ones such as the Macharius or Gorgon, but you're still looking at an additional 600 points of units just to take the Spartan.

However, if we were to ignore this, the Spartan is still something like 497 points with basic weapons (8 Lascannons, 2 Heavy Bolters). I think it's pretty okay, with somewhat better armament, fewer wounds but better save, somewhat cheaper price and higher transport capacity, when compared to e.g. Baneblades.

~5000 points of IG and DKoK

I'm awful at reading private messages, so just reply to the threads I'm visiting.

It's a phenomenal assault transport and each quad lascannon is basically a predator. But as above the relic rule makes it damn near impossible to bring. I really hope FW amends the rule in general as it penalizes a player for trying use their stuff. Hell chaos doesn't have such restrictions.

I guess the key question is whether it's worth ~150 points more than a standard land raider. For that you get:

- 4 more lascannons
- 15 bigger transport capacity
- A few more wounds
- Steel behemoth (can't be prevented from firing by getting charged).

It's a pain that it's a super-heavy. I phoned FW about the relic problem and was told that they've realised it doesn't work and will release a FAQ to fix it. So it ought to become useable in future.

Overall, if we get to actually field the thing, then I think it will have its uses. If nothing else, a fully-laden Spartan will go a long way to ensuring you get first turn. You could argue that you're only really paying 100 points to transport 25 dudes, if you discount the price of the predator glued on each side.
