hi all,
im in the middle of dark imperium now and was just wondering about a few things.
when/where is it ever spelled out how a primaris is made?
they arent made from scratch because some have memories of the old days.

i also remember seeing someone saying that a normal marine can be upgraded into a primaris. where is this fluff?

im really enjoying the book so far but is it just me or does guy haley seem to drag things out too far in his descriptions of things? im all for setting the mood and immersion but man, if i can skip a paragraph and not miss anything due to an overblown explanation of a bit or bob about something then that just seems a little over done. lol...

and lastly... if i want to get caught up on the whole fall of cadia and return of guilliman is there a novel/novels to read about this or is it from the rulebooks released at the end of 7th?

I think the idea of Primaris marines being in vats came from the first teaser video for 8th edition. However, in hindsight I think they were stasis pods and not vats after all. It seems that they have simply been implanted with modified Geneseed/additional organs by Cawl, presumably in stages over the last few thousand years while he was working on them.

I have also wondered about where the upgrades came from, as it doesn't seem to be in the fluff. I think it was probably from a vaguely-worded GW reply to a question on Facebook.

I also noticed the overly-detailed descriptions in the book, but in some cases I think this is intended to be useful to people looking to paint miniatures. In particular, I am planning to paint some Primaris Ultramarines and some Greyshields, and the sometimes overly-detailed descriptions of colours will be useful (I don't want to do standard 2nd company Ultramarines and it's not yet clear how the composition of standard vs Primaris marines varies throughout the chapter, so a few of the comments in the book on e.g. the colour of the temporary 11th company, Captain Felix's lack of shoulder rim colours, etc, might be useful to me).

I would also like to find a separate story on the Gathering Storm events, but it seems to only be in the books. However, there is a very detailed summary somewhere on DakkaDakka (I'm afraid I don't have the link readily available though).

Yup Cawl got his candidate from Adeptus Astartes initiate and diverted geneseed from the tithe to make the Primaris. About the whole upgrade I think it was Guy Haley or someone else at GW. He clearly said in the livestream that Space Marine could be upgraded to Primaris thanks to Cawl serum. As of now there is nothing about it in the game so I don't consider it real.

good point on the attention to detail for painters. i hadn't thought of that.

It is from the second live Q&A with Pete Foley and he states it pretty unambiguously.
