I bought my son the Tau Empire Battleforce (opened) and it didn't come with any assembly instructions for the models. Assembling them hasn't been an issue, but now that they are done we have no idea what this model is.

Does it do anything? Is it terrain? Any help is greatly appreciated!

It's a homing beacon marker. It is placed by stealth suits and it allows other deepstriking units to land closer than the 9" normally needed.
