I recently got ahold of two rhinos for pretty cheap. I've done the interiors, and I guess I'd like to try to sell the things on Ebay or whatever to make some money. Which chapters do people buy prepainted for? I started doing one in DA colors because they seem popular, but I haven't touched the other one yet.

It'll be hard to sell one painted. Mainly due to the colors may differ from the persons army they are buying for. I'd do both the same. Sell them together or separate, but I'd keep them the same if you wanted to sell them without waiting forever. IMO

ultramarines are the answer, but unless you can really paint there not made more expensive by painting them. NOS/NIB is best price other then commission quality
sorry mate

Well, I figured that I can do some kind of kooky freehand thing, like paint a cool sword/wings thing on it. I haven't had reason to do something like that on my own models but I take it that buyers love that kind of thing.

Without trying to be a dick - how good of a painter are you?
Generally, I'd say about 90% of stuff which is painted by someone sells for MSRP or less.
If you're good with a brush etc., and don't care too much about profit - I'd go with any of the big basic chapters. However consider the time you'll spend vs. what you'll gain back. If you look on eBay - the site is awash with mediocre painted Rhinos....thousands of them, lol. All of them asking $26-45 or so.
You'll be lucky to shift them for a profit unless you can really paint. Now, that's not to say you won't stumble upon someone locally who'll pick them up off of ya for a decent price.

Since it's directly relevant, I don't think it's a dickish question. I'm alright but not fantastic or anything. It sounds like I won't be making much, if anything, on these two. I'll probably finish the DA one anyway, because it's my opportunity to play with masking and the airbrush, then do the other for my marines. I've just seen a few go for more than MSRP that had freehand stuff on them, and that flat top of the rhino seemed like an obvious spot to show off something like that, so I figured I'd give it a go. Here's a shot of the second one that just has the interior(minus the bolter's shell, which I was leaving primer until I knew what color to do it in).

One problem(IMO at least) with selling individual prepainted models is that buyer rarely if ever can paint his models to match. So any bought painting would stick out like a sore thumb.
For this I think selling painted works better for bigger batch like entire army.
Could be wrong though. Don't buy painting so any painting is negative mark for me as it would be stripped anyway. Reason being above "stick like a sore thumb". Maybe others don't mind lack of unity in paint job though.

I did start to think of that. I wouldn't actually buy anything painted either because painting and modeling's the fun part, but I guess I'm assuming that the chapters' Citadel colors will help with the sore thumbing.

I think you should leave the exterior unpainted but primed for the next person. Generally I find people are only willing to buy painted models (that they don't want to strip) if they're part of a larger lot. It's very, very rare for someone to buy a model that would go straight into their army. (I once bought some old BA models but the color the guy used is a lot more orange than my scheme, so in the chem bath they went).
That said, I'd think either Ultramarines or Blood Angels would be good candidates for Rhinos; Ultramarines because they're so prolific that you'll definitely find someone who'd take it and Blood Angels because traditionally they've had Fast Rhinos, which made them more preferable to drop pods for other armies (although I don't think this holds true right now, it might be in the future when they get their own codex).

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.
