Just trying to get into 8th after shelving my Imperial Fists. Which right now seem unplayable.

So I figure why not collect tau and Nids.

What should I start with so I don't get my butt handed to me in every game? And what point cost should I aim for?

I would really like to get fire warriors and drones.

8th Tau's consiste of:

Firewarriors, GunDrones, Vespids (YES VESPIDS) and Crisis Suits (But as small and supportive units instead of the bulk of your force).

In second place, the Big Stealth Suit is pretty decent, Hammerheads are usefull too and even more after the FAQ about how they inflict Mortal Wounds, and Broadsides even being very expensive have their place. Kroots, specially Carnivores and Hounds have their places too.

Do you mean that firewarriors should be used as small supportive units?

Could you elaborate?

No, that was about the Crisis Suits.

GunDrones don't only put a lot of dakka for their points, they are extra gounds to your more important troops.

Vespids are flexible, cheap, have a decent AP, good damage, and very fast.

Crisis Suits are highly especialized units but are very fragile and expensive, so you can't base your army in them. Suit-Tau is death.
Firewarriors just benefit about all the core rules buffs to infantry. Plus their S5 gun hurts basically every other infantry in 3+

Longstrike+Hammerheads is too a very good combo. But I recommend you to look at the Tau post in the Tactica subforum for better advice!

It's an amazing deal. Start Collecting! Tau Empire is like a $140 value (talking US dollars) for like $85. It's a steal! In the bundle you also get the Index you need to play Tau, so why not?

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2300 | Leagues of Votann: ~1300 | Tyranids: ~3400 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000 | Kruleboyz: ~3500 | Lumineth Realm-Lords: ~700

Stealth suits with drone controllers and a 12 man drone squad accompanying them is a great unit. If they shoot at your stealth suits, -1 hit and drones take the damage. If they shoot your drones, its what you want them to do anyway.

If you are building toward a playable detachment, probably buy another Start Collecting box honestly. You probably won't need the extra Ethereal but it's still a great deal. After that, it depends on what you want your list to be like. Hammerheads are debatable, as are broadsides, although I think both are usable in the right list. Vespids are actually good for the first time ever, although the models are Finecast and somewhat expensive $$-wise for what you get. One unit you should definitely pick up would be Pathfinders, possibly more than one box. Character-wise, you should get at least one Commander and magnetize all the options for him. In fact, magnetize all Crisis suits and weapons so they are all interchangeable. It's super easy and really useful.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2300 | Leagues of Votann: ~1300 | Tyranids: ~3400 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000 | Kruleboyz: ~3500 | Lumineth Realm-Lords: ~700

More Fire Warriors. In fact, a 2nd or even 3rd Start Collecting can't really go wrong. You get more weapons for your Crisis Suits, which is important if you want to run double or triple gun suits, and you get 8 drones per start collecting, and drones are awesome.

One thing that struck me (haven't played since 5th) is how HQ heavy Battleforged armies can be, but the Tau have a great low point options; Darkstrider and Cadre Fireblades, which are all about buffing infantry. Cadre Fireblades are dead easy to convert from Firewarriors (glue the bottom of a pulse carbine to the top of a pulse rifle, stick a bonding knife somewhere, call it a day), so if you (like me), think the GW Cadre Fireblade looks like he's been hitting the donut shop a bit heavily and his price tag is too high, just convert your own!

Speaking of Battleforged, look at the charts and see what kind of force you'd like to build. Obviously you don't have to build Battleforged armies, but if you want that option, building towards those objectives is smart.

Lots of conflicting advice. What would be a good mix for 7th edition and 8th? Most of my game group hates 8th. Terrain rules lack of templates and shooting from the hull.

8th is a bit more simple game than 7th was. I suggest you buy 5 Riptides and make them hate 7th edition so you can play your Fire Warriors with 8th edition rules again.

Total LOL on this...

Haven't played my Tau since 7th but I do have lots of firewarriors, suits (5 stealth & 10 regular), drones, and devilfish (and a railhead). I didnt see Pathfinders or Tetra Scout speeders...are they "third" place in value in 8th?
