I'm wondering why Vassal 40k isn't more widely adopted? It's amazing, and I would think with how many tens-of-thousands of 40k players are on this forum alone, it would come up more.

It's great. I might start a vendetta to get it more wide-spread. Anyone with me?

Personally, I completely understand why. It's lacking all the interaction that I play 40k for. Don't enjoy playing vassal.

7ed killed it. It was impossible to get good pick up games with all the rules bloat and shinanigans. As such less and less players used it which snowballed into being almost completely dead.

8ed should be much more compatible with the system though

Completely see this too.

8th has reinvigorated my personal attention to Vassal, and now I'm starting to see more people there... I hope it continues, 8th + Vassal is really good.

I've enjoyed trying all sorts of new armies for 8th rules in Vassal... without having to $$$ buy models / amounts without knowing anything about them.

Prefer tabletop simulator to it.

I feel like more people would use it, even just as a 'tool', if they knew about it...

Are there any organized leagues / tournaments / events, or communities for Vassal 40k?

It lacks the models and interactivity I play this game for, so definitely not my cup of tea.

Some of my friends that used to use it have moved on to tabletop simulator and they say it's really good.

Why Aye Ya Canny Dakkanaughts!

I think, if I was gonna play some form of online 40k TT game, I'd personally go for 40k on Table Top Simulator since it's far more tangable than these 2D 40k games.

I think a big reason is that it functions really poorly for 40k. True los doesn't work on vassal, it works better for games with abstract terrain rules because you can easily define the terrain. For example I have used it for Malifaux, and it is easy to define the terrain because all the rules are abstract (this terrain piece is Height 2, soft cover), this has never been the case for 40k.

It also always seems to take a long time to play the game. moving models takes much longer (especially for hordes), it also has issues if you are not using something like Skype to communicate with the opponent, typing out everything takes a long time.

It works ok for playing people you already know, but I feel like the social contract is much less, and if you get in a rules argument you may as well quit the game because you cannot show your opponent the rules.

I used to use this a ton back in the day, 4th edition, to test lists etc to see what I wanted to purchase. Was a lot of good people on back then. I should fire it up again.

Because, quite frankly, Vassal is an unintuitive, barely interactive experiment from the dark ages of online gaming.

Vassal was my exclusive 40k platform from 5e to the end of 6th. 7th killed the community so now I play on TT simulator with friends.

Often.

I don't want the best army, just one that isn't an exercise in picking up my models by turn 3.

The game doesn't need super space marines, it needs more variety.

It doesn't matter if you're not dominating the game; if you have 3-4 x as many models and options than the rest of us and you're still getting new kits, we're still gonna rip on the faction. If I had 100 + Drukhari kits all in plastic to choose from, or 100 + Sisters kits, I think I'd be more likely to be receptive to Space Marine player's complaints about anything.
