I'm reading through the options for the Company Veterans and the Dark Angels.

The Company Veterans come with bolt pistol and chainsword as standard. Then you have the option of giving up either for various upgrades. The Dark Angels section adds the following to Company Veterans: Any model in this unit may take a combat shield.

The FAQ added: "In addition, one Space Marine Veteran in the unit may take an item from the Heavy Weapons list.

Unlike other sections talking about replacing options, this addition just states "may take".

Does this mean I can have a veteran with bolt pistol, chainsword, and heavy weapon. Or even upgrade the basic weapons in addition to the heavy weapon?

As written in the FAQ, yes.

However, it is almost certainly a mistake.
