I talked with a friend on this and they said you can move through your own models and I insisted they cannot as the rules for movement state nothing about friend or for. They then said so their Hive Tyrant can't move through gaunts?

I didn't have a sound argument for that other than 8th is about tactical positioning...am I missing something or are they?

From 'Moving' (pg. 177 of the 8th edition rulebook):

It cannot be moved through other models or through terrain features such as walls...

I see nothing that indicates that this only applies to enemy models.

pg 177, 1. Movement Phase, Moving, paragraph 1

It cannot be moved through other models or through terrain features such as walls, but can be moved vertically in order to climb or traverse any scenery.

Your friend is thinking of earlier editions. This is no longer the case in 8th. If you friend wants to move a Hive Tyrant, he should move his gaunts first to leave a path for the Hive Tyrant.

If a unit can Fly however they can move over units both friend and foe.

As others have said, you can't move through any models, friend or foe, unless your rules (like Fly) say you can.

For me, the joy is in putting some good-looking models on the board and playing out a fantasy battle - not arguing over the poorly-made rules of some 3rd party who neither has any power over my play nor will be visiting me (and my opponent) to ensure we are "playing by the rules"
