Hey there! I've decided to paint my primaris half of the dark imperium box in a Sons of Malice theme and just wondering if anyone has any tips or tricks for painting the checkered armor pattern for them? Would priming white and masking off all the black parts while I paint up the light greys and such for the white and then painting in all the black after work well?

Personally if i had to do quartered scheme in black and white, id

1) assmebly painting. (dont glue anything after cleaning mould lines so its easier to get to things)
2) Prime grey or white, if grey dry brush or highlight white with air brush
3) liquid mask the quartered border. going a bit into the black side since its easier to touch up black over white. or if im feeling cheap just use silly putty.
4) spray black, then dry brush or airbrush a dark grey for highlights.

clean off the mask, touch up then details.

That seems a very effective method and pretty quick though I do not have or use an airbrush at all, the masking for me would be more of a visual aid/reference of how far over not to go with colors and not for achieving crisp lines, as those will be established/painted with a fine detail brush and the rest colored in like a coloring book.
I was thinking prime white or light grey, mask off what will be black, paint the celestra grey, than ulthuan grey, than recess shade with either nuln oil, agrax earthshade, or watered down "the fang", then edge and detail highlight with white scar, than paint the black areas with abandon black, and edge/detail highlight with either mechanics standard grey or administratum grey, and a final sharper highlight of ulthuan or debris Ian grey(if I do the watered down fang for recesses on the white. Then paint in details like gold trim and then apply a liberal amount of Blood for the Blood God!

Seems excessive but can work.

starting off from the white (grey) side is key because because it will be far easier than going from black.

I wouldn't bother worrying about masking while doing the white since you are going over it again with black which will cover it in a coat.

i would also not worry about doing the double wash and just do a single wash of black when everything is done.
