What would be the best way to catch up with 8th edition? The truth is I have little to zero time to actually play the game since our baby girl was born, but I still want in!!! So what is your opinion on the subject?
(Been in 40k since 1st edition, got myself all starter sets from 4th to 7th edition, plus enough battleforces to play more than enough armies on a decent level.)

Dark Imperium box is a pretty good deal for two small skirmish armies.

How do you mean "catch up"? If you're not playing, you'll probably want to avoid buying any Indexes or Codexes for a few months. GW has a free Battle Primer floating around on their website, so that gets you the core rules for free (but you need the £35 BRB to actually play). Fluffwise... TL: DR: GW is taking even more swipes at their IP in an attempt to destroy it and make it more kid-friendly. I don't find it much worth looking into anymore. That said, the Dark Imperium book updates you on the main points: The Galaxy's been torn in half by a giant warp rift, Guilliman has returned, and a GW-funded DM's caveat means he magicked up a few thousand "Primaris Marines" with the help of a Mechanicus nut. Also the IOM is now fine with tech heresy, and nobody has any ideological problems with the Nu-Marines. Not the Inquisition, not the Templars, not the SoB, not the Ecclesiarchy, not the Space Wolves...

avoid the indexs. They will be rapidly replaced.

Build and play is probably the best...only? way to play Pick an army > if space marines wait a bit for the codex > if not grab an index with your army in it > make a list ( id go for a small and manageable list to work into like 1k since you do have a little nurgling to deal with) > then go play a game on the weekends when its your turn for free time. The indexs are fine for people that want to get a taste for all the armies. they are free to get a codex once they pick out something they absolutely love and want to commit to.

Seems so! But with the smaller starter sets and the 8 page rules, I still consider all my options!!! Automatically Appended Next Post: Selym wrote:How do you mean "catch up"?

If I truly need the BRB, then Dark Imperium seems like a decent way in! Automatically Appended Next Post:
I even tend to avoid the BRB in case it's an overgrown Battle Primer!!!

The new No Fear box set is an awesome deal in my opinion...
But I am gonna invest in an airbrush first.
I need to catch up with painting techniques and remember that new models and new rules are only part of the hobby. New skills are first on my list of things that I need to develop. And the quiet hmmmm of an airbrush might help a baby girl sleep I would imagine...

Do we know yet how much of a rulebook "Know No Fear" or "First Strike" will have? Because unless they have a complete ruleset, then "Dark Imperium" is a strong recommendation if you care about either army in it.
The big rulebook is $60. For $100 more, you can get Dark Imperium and get 53 figures. Unless you really don't like the figures, it makes a lot of sense to go with DI.

Yeah the full book hardcover is cool but for twenty pages of rules some free some bad and some unnecessary well... There are lots of pretty pictures. Or the No Fear set has 31 models for about half the cost at least where I am... So for someone who might want to wait for actual codices and revised rules next year most likely I like the No Fear kit...

Dark Imperium has matched armies. The Death Guard portion stats up at about 800 points (I am unsure about the Primaris, as I cannot muster any interest in them) which leaves about 200 points of flex room. Got a Nurgle Rhino and some cultists? You have a 1000 point army.

I have seen the insides of the of the small First Strike box. The Get Started book has some fluff, and painting and collecting advice, and gives you what rules you need scenario by scenario. It's not a 'rulebook' in the traditional sense, more of a programmed instruction hand holder, telling you only what is needed for the particular scenario, with each building on the last.
Also included in First Strike is the 'Core Rules'. This is 24 pages that is essentially the same as the 12 page Battle Primer they handed out at launch. Just more pages because of its small digest size. It has the 8 pages of rules turned into 16 or so, and the Only War mission; nothing else, just like the Primer. I haven't seen the 'Know No Fear' rulebook to comment on that one.

Congratulations on the birth of your daughter.

Since you have the starter sets, why not get the starter set for 8th edition? There is the big one that is what $200 Canadian (about) that includes the hard cover rule book. There are I believe 2 smaller sets as well but I don't think they have the hard cover rule book, but could be wrong. All sets have some sort of the new space marines and Nurgle Space marines. I say if you have the money get the big starter set. Lots of minis in there and the hard cover rule book.
Depending on your armies you have only get the indexes (the stats and rules for the minis, no fluff) for you play. There is a new Space Marine codex coming out next week (or is that pre order and comes out in 2 weeks?) and I believe Nurgle or Chaos Space Marines after that. By the time end of December comes out, GW is trying to have out 10 codices, but we don't know what they are yet.
Hope this helps.
