I am repainting and freshing up my tyranid army. I am leviathan (white + purple, red tallons) and I am having so much trouble with the carapases. This is particularly true with the smaller gaunts. I can not make them look good.
I'm not the greatest painter, but did that scheme for my nids many years ago. I'm not sure where your problem is? Is the purple not good? I painted my purple as a wash highlighting up from black, and then did lighter streaks from edges. Pictures can be found here. I am not an expert painter though, so take it for what it is worth.
