I thought I'd go through my impression of the tyranids in 8th. I have played 6 games and also watched battle reports, watched other games, etc. Feel free to disagree. In fact, I'd love to hear more from other players.
Hive Tyrant: B
He has some competitive builds but lacks the power to rip through heavy armour and gets his ass whooped by a lot of bigger stuff. Can't stress how important psychers are. He does a good job there. My favourite build is 2x spitters w/maggots and rending claws. With or without wings.
Swarmlord: A
When he's fresh, he kicks ass. When he's not fresh, he still kicks ass. Hive Commander is the bomb. Nothing else in the army comes close to doing anything like that. 300 points is pricy. Protect him.
Old One Eye: A
In a list with multiple fexes, he is indispensable. Given his load out, 140 points is a steal.
Broodlord: A
Amazing. With stealers, he makes them shred about anything.
Tyranid Prime: B
He has his role. Just by himself, he is a cheaper HQ choice and a reasonable fighter with a lot of options. Once you load him up to shoot hard or fight hard, he's expensive. Synapse is only 8 inches.
Tervigon: B
Sturdy and has a lot of cool abilities but almost requires you to build a certain kind of list to get his points worth. He has only 3 attacks and hitting on 4+ to start, 5 with the claws makes him not that big of a threat. Probably better to ignore.
Warriors: B
A main stay and versatile but no matter what I arm them with, they always seem to disappoint me. I never rely on them for anything more than a support role.
Genestealers: A+
They are so going to get nerfed in the codex. 12 points for what they can do is sick. Combined with the trygon tunnel and/or hive commander, they can shock the hell out of people.
Termagants: A-
For what they cost, they're great. The new rules for morale make them a perfect tar pit if they have synapse nearby. Lots of gun options.
Hormagaunts: B
In one game so far, they have done what they were meant to. Every other time, they disappointed me. If you want to fast alpha strike, they hit and then die quickly. If you arm them up with more stuff, they're almost as expensive as a genestealer. Better to go that route.
Ripper swarm/Sky slasher: B
I can't see them doing a lot other than annoying your opponent. In a non-kill point game, there's potential to just burrow them up and threaten to get in the way or tie stuff up.
Tyrant Guard: B-
I'm meh on these guys. They do their role but they're far from cheap and have a minimum squad of 3. If you load them to fight, they are too pricy. Better to field them naked, if at all.
Hive Guard: A++
They have never disappointed me. I have had luck with both guns but more luck with shock cannons. It allows them to stay in synapse. I'd go impaler in a shooty list and leave a babysitter in the back field for the other shooters.
Lictor: B
He has his role but I can't see him taking down anything of great value. Point-wise, he's reasonable.
Maleceptor: C or D
Yet to see him in action on anyone's list, but he looks like a bag of crap.
Zoanthropes: B
More psychers is better than less psychers but I am not impressed from what I have seen. To get a lot of damage from smite, you need so many of them. They're vulnerable to the charge.
Venomthrope: C
Disappointed. Too large of a unit size for points and not enough effect.
Pyrovore: B-
Very specific usage. Expensive but able to hit hard.
Haruspex: B-
Very fluffy but I am underwhelmed. I think he'll die befire he gets to do anything really cool.
Deathleaper: B+
Lots of potential but easy to counter. He's not over priced at least.
Red Terror: A
IMHO, underpriced and underrated. Lots of potential with or without ravener buddies, but better with.
Shrikes: B
I tend to not like fighting with my warriors anyways. I prefer shooting. At least they can fall back and shoot. For an extra 6 points a model.
Raveners: A-
A lot of potential but no one in my local group is playing them. Theory-hammer wise, strong and not overly expensive.
Gargoyles: B
Potential is there but I don't see a role for them in most lists. Using them in a charge with blinding venom and the horror requires too many things to happen together.
Harpy: B
I thought I liked it but I seem to like it less and less. I love the model and potential for mass shooting but it doesn't pack the punch it needs to.
Hive Crone: B
Same as above.
Mucolid spores/spore mines: B+
I should use them more often. Good disruption and hitting vulnerable targets.
Tyrannocyte: B
Good for specific usage but costs a lot, moves really slowly, gets force-fed 5 guns and only hits on 5+.
Carnifex: A+
One of the most improved models. So many strong builds and cheap as dirt for 8 wounds that don't degrade.
Biovore: B+
Huge improvement but not nearly a mainstay on lists. Cost-wise, effective but not going to make or break a game.
Trygon/Trygon Prime: A+
He always does great for me. The tunnel effect by itself is worth its weight in gold. I usually go with the regular trygon. For some reason, trygon's 6 shots do more damage for me than prime's 12 shots. I pop up where I want. I have yet to get suckered into assaulting the wrong thing.
Mawloc: C
His burrowing effect is cool but underwhelming. Mawloc is cheap, which is his only saving grace. He does not pack a punch with no AP on his attacks and he gets gibbled down to S 4.
Exocrine: A
Absolutely amazing shooting if you can get him deployed in the right place. He mows down entire units.
Tyrannofex: B
Lots of options but none of them impress me overly. He is a LOT of points for what he does.
Toxicrene: B-
Cool potential. I hope to field one of these one day. Just for potential, Carnifex is better all around.
Sporocyst: C
Immobile, weak, and not good at shooting. Maybe he has a usage. I can't see it.
