That being said, the codex FAQ has states that you can use the Index rules until an updated Datasheet appears (if they ever do). Red Emphasis mine.

Codexes: Your Questions Answered wrote:There are a few options that are missing in the codex that appear in the index: why is that? Does that mean I can’t use these models in my army anymore?
While the indexes are designed to cover a long history of miniatures, the codexes are designed to give you rules for the current Warhammer 40,000 range. There are a few options in the indexes for some Characters and vehicles that are no longer represented in the Citadel range – certain Dreadnought weapons that don’t come in the box, or some characters on bikes, for example.
Don’t worry though, you can still use all of these in your games if you have these older models. In these instances, use the datasheet from the index, and the most recent points published for that model and its weapons (currently, also in the index).
They still gain all the army wide-bonuses for things like Chapter Tactics and can use Space Marines Stratagems and the like, so such venerable heroes still fit right in with the rest of your army.

Can I combine units from the index and a codex into one army?
The datasheets in the new codexes overwrite the same datasheets in the index books. You can certainly use units with updated datasheets alongside units from the index that have yet to be updated. Once a unit has been covered in the codex though, we assume you’re using the latest version.

Thought I'd make a thread to discuss this and preface it with the above to stop the rabid whaling like when people though Raven Guard CT applied to Stormravens.

That being said, it looks like GW has taken the "If we don't make an exact model for it anymore, you don't get rules for it anymore, direct your complaints to Chapterhouse" to heart, but someone with a shred of human decency on the rules team managed to convince them to give people the Index rules instead of nothing. Let's hope they make a Veteran Bike or Librarian on Bike official box with a datasheet in.

Was considering a mounted White Scars force but the removal of Librarian on Bike is a real kick in the teeth.

I'm hoping against hope that at the same time GW will take note of some of the most popular stuff that way and eventually give us a mini. a Biker Libby would be pretty awesome

Opinions are not facts please don't confuse the two

I don't see the problem?
You can still use the index.

It was pretty clear what they had planned with the Index, a lot of options were cut out because the official model doesn't have that option.
Primaris didn't get options at all.

This seems rather clunky, it Seems more like something they didn't really learn and only now seeing a issue to fix.

Not the worst issue, but still a bit odd.

That statement plainly states that if it's in the Index, and it's not in the Codex, you can still use it.

The fact that they are no longer making the models is irrelevant for this edition.

That's the weirdest and most pointless way to handle this I can imagine. How on earth are they gonna handle chapter tactics applying?

The only possible explanation is someone wanted to update the rules even with the models no longer for sale, was told no, and then used the idea of sticking it in the index to convince them. Maybe "this way, the index will still be useful even once all the codices are out, so they won't feel like they wasted money" or something.

Easy, Chapter Tactics affect units with Inf/Bikes/Dread keywords, with the <Chapter> faction keyword. Whether the datasheet in question is printed in the Codex, the Index, a FW index or White Dwarf is irrelevant.

Not taking up codex space forevermore with old/obscure/rare models while still allowing them to be used is a good thing. Reprinting the Imperial Space Marine (for example) in EVERY SM codex would be a real waste, so having them in the Index and usable for the forseeable future is a good way to do it. Certainly better than squatting them !

This will suck for Ravenwing players if they strip out librarians and chaplains from the codexes.

Why? The Index Imperium I still has them. It isn't like the option disappears. And let's face it, basically every DA player that is playing 8th has the Index.

They could just replace the index with the codex and remove them entirely if you prefer.

Or they could have added them in the Codex and be consumer friendly for the first time in 30 years?

They've provided you with a handy Army List template and easily photocopied Data Slates for each unit in the Index. Print/copy your relevant pages and leave the books at home. What book the unit's rules are in should be irrelevant, flipping through a book like a Codex or Index in the middle of a game is a terrible way to play.

When DA are released, having a character on bike (Librarian/Chaplain) would be a great addition, but as has been said, use the index. I have both for my RW army and would not consider playing anyone who said you couldn't use them even if they were replaced.

I have space marines in grav bikes from 2nd. Why didnt do they rules for those in every codex for the past 25 years?!
You are so unreasonable people. Do you realise they cant print rules for EVERYTHING they have done since the beginning of the game in all of the Future codexs ? New things arrive, the old ones go away.
Is like asking you ps4 to be retrocompatible with your ps1 games. And you can still use miniatures as other units.

Dakka does have White Knights and is also rather infamous for it's Black Knights. A new edition brings out the passionate and not all of them are good at expressing themselves in written form. There have been plenty of hysterical responses from both sides so far. So we descend into pointless bickering with neither side listening to each other. So posting here becomes more masturbation than conversation.

I just ordered a couple metal Chaos Dreadnoughts that are going to lead very happy lives as Hellbrutes. The rules have a ton of options for making your old stuff work, people are getting uppity about the narrowest of edge cases.

No-one said that you wouldn't be doing that.

And besides, you have a choice - you can carry around the Index too (or, even easier, photocopy/print out the datasheet for the unit you want), or you can just not take the model. It's your choice, but you have the option to take it all the same.

They/them
