Hey guys so I absolutely love Dan Abnetts work in the Gaunts Ghosts series. I'm currently waiting for my copy of the lost to arrive in the mail But I wanted to see if I could expand my 40k reading into less guard focused books so I stopped by my local barns and nobles and while perusing the 40k section I discovered I am slaughter the first book in the 12 book rise of the beast series.

I snatched it up because I figured I wanted to read some of his more recent work but discovered after finishing the book that the series is actually written by multiple authors. Is it still worth the 20ish bucks a pop to finish up the series or should I cut my loses at the first book and start looking into other series.

Second question: any suggestion for other series that you'd recommend? Just as some back ground I've read some of the Cain series but disliked how it was so repetitive. Just looking for quality writing from less common factions... maybe a book about the inquisition or officio assasinorum.

Thanks for your suggestions and please let me know if this is the wrong sub forum. Haven't posted in dakka for a long time

Rise of the Beast was great. A few books in, there's this wonderful moment where the more space-opera, sci-fi-esque M32 Warhammer stories suddenly become the classic High Fantasy, heroes and gods in space of M30 and M40 again, and it's thrilling.

If you want quality writing about uncommon factions, check out Baneblade, and its sequel Shadowsword. You might also enjoy the Horus Heresy novel "Nemesis". It stands on its own fairly well, and is about a team of the six different types of assassins on a mission to kill Horus. (They capture an Eversor and stage an intervention for him, so he'll actually be sane when he joins them on their mission.)

Hopefully this doesn't derail the thread but is there a follow-up to i am slaughter?

I want to know what happens next!

The Eisenhorn and Ravenor series are excellent...

'Predator, Prey' is the next book - http://www.blacklibrary.com/series/the-beast-arises

I have only read five so far. They have been of very variable quality, even more so than normal for 40k books.

I thought that the first and fourth books were OK, the second and third were good and the fifth was bad. So at this point I am undecided whether to continue spending my money.

I recommend Vaults of Terra: The Carrion Throne as your next read.

I've been listening to the audiobook version, Gareth Armstrong does a pretty decent job assigning gravitas to even the weaker parts. I'm on book 6 right now and I'm generally positive about it.

The series is kind of a 'light' Horus Heresy, allowing Black Library's authors to strut their stuff with a nice arching narrative without the added pressure to keep producing that the HH series has.

As for other recommendations, I rather like Death of Integrity. It's a Space Marines book but focusses on two successor chapters trying to work together to investigate a Space Hulk.
