Why Aye Ya Canny Dakkanaughts!

I was reading through Imperial Armour chaos for some good firing platforms and I came to the Leviathan. When I first saw this monster I was completely distracted by double Butcher Cannon arrays which give the model 16xS8 shots, which I thought was pretty good until I read the Grav-Flux bombardment: d3 shots, +d3 shots for every 5 models in the unit, base stats of S9 AP-5 D2 that increases to D5 if the model being targeted is a Monster, Vehicle or Titanic. And as of the FAQ you can take two!
So after looking through the recently published Tournament lists (and seeing only Stormravens, Razorwings, Horrors and Conscripts) I wondered if the Leviathan could make a list that rivalled those top lists, so here we are:
Spearhead Detachment
HQ
Abaddon
-253pts
Troops
Horrors
- Blue Horror
- 23xBrimstone Horrors
-51pts
Heavy Support
Hellforged Leviathan Dreadnought
- 2xGrav-Flux Bombardment
- 2xHellflamers
-339pts
Hellforged Leviathan Dreadnought
- 2xGrav-Flux Bombardment
- 2xHellflamers
-339pts
Hellforged Leviathan Dreadnought
- 2xGrav-Flux Bombardment
- 2xHellflamers
-339pts
Hellforged Leviathan Dreadnought
- 2xGrav-Flux Bombardment
- 2xHellflamers
-339pts
Hellforged Leviathan Dreadnought
- 2xGrav-Flux Bombardment
- 2xHellflamers
-339pts
-1999pts
This list has base 10d3 S9 AP-5 D2 shots that has D5 for anything big and increases in shots for spammy lists. Versus Stormravens we have 10d3 S9 AP-5 D5 shots hitting on 3s re-rolling to hit and versus Conscripts (50 man units) that becomes 22d3 shots per dreadnought!. If they get charged they have 2 HellFlamers each.
The general tactic is to have a line of Dreadnoughts with Abaddon sitting just behind them giving them all re-rolls and the Horrors bubble wrapping Abaddon from being attacked. They'll all move up together (or at least try to) and Abaddon will counter charge anything that does manage to get past their overwatch.
The only downside to this list is the 18" range of the weapons, but the Leviathans have 8" movement which makes their threat range 26" and with BS2+ and re-rolls the -1 to hit doesn't hurt as much.
What do people think of this list? It's only really a concept list, I don't play in that many tournaments and those I do play in aren't too competitive, so I doubt I'd use this list (not to mention that the Leviathans alone would cost about £350 for something I'm not likely to use that often).

Lots of fire power, but lack of range, 26" threat on the Lev, you could get out ranged and nullified a bit. Trouble with minimal units that pack firepower is once you lose one, it really cuts a lot of your power.
Try it out, LEV are definitely, awesome. You could opt to run a lord, and try to fit some havocs of 36-48" guns in. Abaddon seems overkill on Levs that hit on 2+ anyway, well for most the time.

Ay, that was my thoughts. The reason I thought Abby might be a good idea is because it means they're still re-rolling all to hit roles after they move, when they're damaged, against flyers and in overwatch. I'll try it out against a friend of mine who's running a top tier Imperial Guard tournament list and see how it does. If the range kills the dream then I'll try swapping a Levi and Abaddon for a Lord and Havocs.

Only thing I'd say is drop abaddon to a lord and take a load more horrors for all of your objective and bad smiting needs.

That is a good point. 5 LEV are tough feat. 18"gun means most things you can shoot, will be able to charge you They have a 4++ however. I actually like Abby in the list with what you just said. Maybe drop one Lev? Take a unit of HAVOCS with 48" D6 damage weapons, and a few rapier batteries to take out horde.
I do realize 5 Lev is a tough thing to take down. I played against a friend who had 8 Decimators with the Mortal wound guns. But was able to really nullify them with my range list, but thats less save power, less T and less wounds also.
Please update how the list runs, I would be interested to hear how it goes.

One thing I'd question is whether or not Lev Dreads can double up on guns?
The index page states they may exchange One siege claw and meltagun for one of the gun options. Automatically Appended Next Post: Its also the same sort of wording for the contemptor chassis too.

Check the IA FAQ: https://www.warhammer-community.com/2017/07/15/new-and-updated-forge-world-faqs-july16gw-homepage-post-2/
They changed it so you can double up on guns.

I'll try to (as soon as my friend gets around to actually texting me back ).
If the original list doesn't pan out I'll try something like this:
Spearhead Detachment
HQ
Chaos Lord
- Power Axe
- Plasma Pistol
-86pts
Troops
Horrors
- Blue Horror
- 29xBrimstone Horrors
-63pts
Heavy Support
Hellforged Leviathan Dreadnought
- 2xGrav-Flux Bombardment
- 2xHellflamers
-339pts

-339pts
Hellforged Leviathan Dreadnought
- 2xGrav-Flux Bombardment
- 2xHellflamers
-339pts
Havocs
- 4xLascannons
-265pts
Patrol Detachment
HQ
Chaos Lord
- Power Axe
- Plasma Pistol
-86pts
Troops
Horrors
- Blue Horror
- 29xBrimstone Horrors
-63pts
Horrors

- 29xBrimstone Horrors
-63pts
-1982pts
Didn't take any Rapiers because the Leviathans are pretty good at cleaning out Hordes on their own.
The Levis, 1 Lord and 2 units of Horrors move up together and leave 1 Lord, the Havocs and a unit of Horrors behind to provide some long ranged support.

I think the second list is stronger. You've got a lot more durability with the horrors, and the havocs free up your leviathans to focus more on infantry if needed.

It has taken a very long time but I've finally managed to test this list out!
It was against a Guard player who had 2xValdor tank hunters and a Malcador Anihilator as well as support vehicles which gave him +1 to hit and re-rolls, a Punisher command tank, a Vendetta gunship, Enginseer's for repairing, a psyker and 45 conscripts as a shield.
Against gunline armies, boy does this list have to treck but 18" is a greater range than most people think it is since you deploy 24" away from your opponant. First turn i whiped his screen with only 2 Levis but he destroyed 1 and damaged another. Second turn I destroyed his Vendetta, the Comissar and a Valdor but he destoyed 2 Levis. Third turn I destoyed the Malcador but he destoyed another Levi. Fourth turn I damaged the Valdor and killed the Psyker but he killed Abbi. Fifth turn I destroyed the Valdor and a Company Commander but he tabled me.
I feel the list suffered greatly against him because he had 4 units that could put out a stupid amount of damage against high toughness, high wounds targets, I think that this list would do a lot better against more TAC and CQC lists. I also wondered whether it would be a good idea to swap Abbi for a Lord and the horrors for cultists then take an Alpha Legion list... hmmmm....
