Im thinking of trying a kan list for my ork army. I was thinking of two units of kans but am also considering one unit of kans and a dread mob. Any thoughts on this and I'll gladly listen to any advice or experience you may have had with such a list

Being T5 and having an armor save means Killa Kanz are tough for str 4 shooting. If you want to do well, I recommend all non character models in your army also be T5 to T8 or at least possess an armor save.
Killa Kan is expensive enough to shoot with Anti tank weapons, so get them a KFF biker mek.

I am the kinda ork that takes his own washing machine apart, puts new bearings in it, then puts it back together, and it still works. |

In my opinion it isn't competitive but its good for semi competitive and for fun games.
Stay away from the Grotzooka, it is utter garbage now. either spam Rokkitz (12pts each) or Big Shootas (6pts each). I run mine with a Big Mek with KFF hiding in the middle next to a Banner Nob (if you want to get them into CC you need that banner nob) The downside is this model explodes on a 6+ when it runs out of wounds so you have a chance of hurting yourself.
I honestly hate the Deff Dreadz. 4 attacks base or 6 when you pay out the nose for them is just not worth it. Plus, for some reason, a giant metal Ork Nob armed almost exclusively with CC weapons still has WS3+ instead of 2+.

I feel like I'd use them for the basis of getting army up field so I'd imagine keeping some cheap since they just gonna die. But my other thought is if I'm going to use them to get up field would I be better off with just a bunch of grots for a lot cheaper? Since kans can be a point drain

your opponent will just have less shooting for his overburdened Anti Kan shooting to do and whatever he brought to remove hordes of grots now has a job.

How many kans you think is enough to do the job with out spending half an army on it for let's say 2000-2500 point game?

Depends on what job you want them doing. Realistically they are giant metal walkers that look really scary but don't really accomplish much, they are the distraction carnifex personified in ork form. The biggest downside is the price tag, they do have a decent amount of wounds, and a good save so they are able to tank a bit. If you want to run them as a distraction unit I would say run 3 or so because anymore and you risk losing points to morale issues and anymore then 3 and you should be investing in a KFF and a leadership bubble for them.
Now if you want them to actually kill things? 2 squads of 6 each, close enough together to get the benefit of a KFF bubble and a banner nob to give them 4+ to hit. Those have a decent chance of overloading 1 side with good armor saves and weight of numbers but realistically you are still going to need to provide a solid amount of support in the form of hordes to make this viable. And at the end of the day you would still be significantly better off fielding another 120 boyz instead of 12 Kanz.
