I didn't see a discussion page for the new GW Campaign, so I thought I'd start one.
The mission rules are here: https://warhammer40000.com/mission-1-invasion/
But in short, Imperial players serve as defenders, anyone else serves as attackers (Unless you have both players as Imperial, or both as not Imperial, in which case you roll off). The Defender gets to take first turn on a roll of a '6', otherwise the attacker goes first. The Defender's job is to kill as many attackers as possible, the Attacker's job is to get as many units into the Defender's deployment zone as possible. First Blood and Linebreaker don't exist, though Slay the Warlord is still around. You can leave any units in reserves, but it's a bad idea since they can't show up until turn two at the earliest, which leaves the rest of your army pretty vulnerable on turn 1, and they have to walk in from your board edge.

There's one Stratagem that lets anyone charge after advancing, for one CP, and there's a strategem that lets you re-roll failed Overwatch attacks and subtract one from the charging unit's Charge Distance for each unit you killed in Overwatch.

So, as an Imperial Player: Thoughts?

There's supposed to be defensive terrain and stuff scattered throughout the Defender's side, so we know we'll have good terrain for defensive purposes. Since army drops don't matter for getting first turn, playing MSU as the defender seems like a great idea, but playing large, tanky units seems good for the attacker so that they can get into the defender's deployment zone and just sit there without giving up VPs by dying, and so they can survive until the end of the game.

It seems like a defensive gunline is going to be the way to go for my Space Marines. I tried a 600pt game with them recently where I took a Chapter Master, Librarian, and a few MSU squads with a Plasma and Combi-Plasma, plus a Rhino and some Company Veterans for flavor, and that worked out really well.

Thoughts? I'm mostly looking for advice as a mixed Imperial player who runs Iron Hands and Sisters as a primary, but of course anyone wanting to discuss Chaos tactics as an attacker should talk about ideas here as well!

Stuff that can pump out a lot of dakka as a Defender is amazing.

Example, I played Orks vs Chaos as Defender and someone charged my 30 man Shoota squad.

2 CP - TL 60 shots. Easy - 9" on the charge (but they then got a twelve).

I'd also deploy fairly close to edge of deployment, maybe not enough to get charged but certainly close enough to stop the opponent getting easy victory points. Of course Astra Milatarum players can use lines of conscripts to stop that happening.

YMDC = nightmare

I played a few games at a local GW store and as far as I know, you have to play the starter box + whatever flavor of the week they chose, such as flyer/fast, lord of war, etc. The problem with this setup is the power levels are really skewed; if you're running 300 points of Militarum Tempestus like I was, you'll get creamed by 500 points worth of CSM, especially if you're not going first.

Are things being done differently for where you guys are?

There's nothing related to this on the rules presented on the website. There WILL be bonuses in future weeks for getting new units and painting them up, but for the first week it's just a basic attacker/defender mission, with no requirements for army. (Though if it's Imperial VS Non-imperial, that dictates who will play as who.)

Upon asking it's a store-to-store decision on how they want to roll it out, is what I found out. The score card with check box tallies for wins and painted units is rather nice.

Playing with the Start Collecting is a bonus point, but you are free to play any army you like unless the LGS is being weird about it.

Have played 3 Konor battles and currently won them all against the Imperium.
