I recently started an imperial guard army. I didnt want to go with the usual gunline gameplay or tank company. I wanted a fast hard hitting army.
My guys call themselves the “Vesuvian First Strikers“ and are the human equivalent of speed freaks.

I use anvil industries minis, armored with gas mask and berets. I only field veterans and command squads. So far I've got about 70 soldiers, some with flamers, some snipers and a few autocannon teams.

Other than i have 2 vultures, 2 valks, a vendetta, 2 avengers, an old lightning (which i'm very proud of), 3 tauros venators (3 more about to come) and a to-be-converted-to-wheels taurox

Current plans for future buying: 2 more taurox, 3 tauros, maybe a commissar or two, a few more veterans and some rough riders on bikes (really looking forward to this conversion but it'll take much money and effort)

Everything with threads or legs shall not be in this army. I'm thinking about converting russes and/or chimeras to wheeled drive but i didnt find the right base models yet. I really am sinking much time and money to make a gorgeous army but I cant help but feel like it will not be effective due to the flyer rule change. What do you think about this project?

Pretty easy. Normal armies nowdays have something equivalent to "air combat controllers", special soldiers trained in calling in airstrikes and working with aircraft for close support fire missions for teams on the ground.

There are entire schools training folks to do this, and some are actual aviators themselves (depends on the army/country).

It's possible that in the 40K universe a small platoon or two could specialize in similar things - being deployed to a section of the battlefield where they are supposed to coordinate heavy air to ground support fire, etc. It'd be cool if you modeled up guys with more radios, binos or laser designator kind of equipment.

EDIT: Removed gigantor pic.

I like the idea. When you talk about effective then you should focus on what is important to you. What is the purpose of the collection? WAAC? If you want to win ITC ten maybe not... But I would try really hard to give you a good game wit an equally well themed army. Say a loser buys the whiskey campaign 2017...
