After skipping most of sixth and all of 7th edition I am getting back into 40k.

I haven't played at the time of writing, which is probably just as well given that I seem.to be missing most of my 'stealers and need to glue a lot of stuff together.

Firstly, I am trying to sort out a quicker way to paint them...and dithering over a paint scheme. My current scheme is purple flesh with blue-black Chiron. However, a chap at the local club has the exact same scheme.

I have also developed a thing for bone colour in schemes.

Did a couple of test models

...which I will post tomorrow when I work.out how to make them a sensible size lol

Welcome back to the hobby, 8th is a great edition to jump back in.

If in doubt load them into the Dakka galley. I've never had issues when posting pics upload to Dakka.

Ah, the straight forward and sensible approach you mean..? Hmm...it could work I suppose...

I've taken your advice - thank you, evildrcheese

I was going to ramble a bit but:

Below you can see my original Nid's scheme of Purple and Blue/Black. I am toying with a more modern palette of Purple Bone, or just using the bone on claws and hooves to add a bit more colour to the models. I think the carapace would benefit from a blue wash as it looks a tad grey.

The grey/bone scheme you see is actually intended for my Legion of Everblight. I did think about using it for Nids but it will be boring to paint two armies (possibly three!) in the same colours.

The bone / cream has a pleasing contrast with the purple, while the Blue/Black has a nice complimentary effect. The latter is also what I already have on the handful of broods I have managed to paint! Barrying the change to bone coloured claws.

Found some of the old background for the ToWG I was participating in several years ago.

"Hivefleet lunchtime’s peculiar name stems from the interruption of an Imperial Governor’s lunch. Governor Augustus Winrush was very insistent that he not be interrupted during this time.

At any other time of the day he was tireless in his duty to the God Emperor but he simply could not abide any interruption to his noon day meal.

So incandescent was his rage that he would regularly fire his las-pistol at whoever interrupted, or his desktop vox-box. Even the commanders of the PDF were loathe to disturb him.

When the hive fleet first appeared in its new form it had not been given a designation by the Imperium. At the time many splinterfleets were misidentified as separate entities, causing all manner of paperwork and crossings out, much to the chagrin of the Administratum. A general order was put out across the sector (and quickly rescinded after the poor wording became obvious) that any Tyranid contact could only be given a designation by the highest ranking member of the Imperium in the system.

Unfortunately, combined with another order that all xenos ships must be codified before engagement (also intended to cut down on the number of false reports) it meant the Hivefleet surging toward Nimby’s world could not be engaged until either the governor named it or it got within range of its own guns – which would rob the Imperial forces of a significant advantage.

Despite his trepidation, the Governor'a long-suffering assistant boldly interrupted the meal.

“By the god-emperor, I need a name for this thing if we are not to be overwhelmed!”
“Dammit, man don’t you know it’s lunchtime?”
The very wise assistant considered this for but a moment, turned to the Imperial Commanders and said “You heard the man, its designated as Hivefleet…Lunchtime. Charge the void screens and open fire – all weapons!”

Have got myself into a slight problem with test models. Currently have six test schemes trying to get purple right...and have been tempted into going for a Hive Fleet Leviathan scheme instead.

Also, a little background for my Alpha Warrior Scar.

"Oddly, Scar pre-dates Hivefleet Lunchtime. He was spawned as part of the Kraken Splinterfeet that would later be absorbed to form Hivefleet Lunchtime.

While his original broodlings were killed, reabsorbed and replaced many times over, Scar has inexplicabily survived. Often Scar was the only survivor, with a fresh compliment of Tyranid Warriors being birthed to fight alongside him.

During the lean and desperate times that the Kraken Splinterfleet endured he would often be the last remaining synapse node on the battlefield. These were some of the splinterfleet's most desperate battles. Perhaps these times account for the strong connection to the Hivemind – in channeling the commands of the Hive Mind so forcibly the Warrior’s own abilities have been strengthened, allowing him to draw upon it to direct entire swarms by himself.

During these conflicts he was badly wounded on numerous occasions. Always low on resources the splinterfleet was unable to simply reabsorb the injured Warrior, instead leaving him to slowly heal between battles. Several times he fought while seeping from multiple wounds from previous engagements.
He even survived the short but bloody conflict the Kraken Splinterfleet and Hivefleet Khaemelon.

It was shortly after the two fleets merged to become Hivefleet Lunchtime that Scar transitioned from ordinary yet plucky Warrior to Alpha.

The new Hivefleet made planet fall at Nimby’s World, where Scar was deployed as part of the assault on the capital city. A small force of Space Wolves had come to the aid of the stricken planet.
Lacking Thunderhawk transport the Space Wolves attempted to break through the Tyranid flank in an armoured column. Holed up in one of the city spires with his trusty venom cannon Scar and his brood stalled the Space Marine Advance, pinning them down for several hours. Scar fought until he was the last warrior standing. He fought on despite several terrible wounds. However, he was struck down by a Plasma Cannon discharge that incinerated his Venom Cannon and part of his arm.

His injuries were too severe for even the will of the Hivemind to keep him fighting and he collapsed. The battle raged on although the Tyranids were pushed back as Scar had been last node once again. Eager to press forward the Space Wolves swept onwards, leaving a gaping hole in the Tyranid lines as the smaller creatures scattered.

A little later the fallen Warrior stirred. Its once lacerated and burnt flesh was flawlessly renewed. More incredibly the shattered limb had been completely restored. Although its carapace bore obvious signs of previous damage those wounds that had cut to the flesh below were plugged with fresh growths of tissue. Indeed, his armour had become denser as it re-knitted itself.
As he gathered weapons from the nearby Tyranid dead Scar found the once leaderless broods flocking to him for he had become a beacon of the Hive Mind’s will. For the first time he would lead his own strike force.

Since then his regenerative abilities have become ever stronger. While his skin has taken on the purple colouration of Lunchtime there are still hints of Kraken’s colours on its carapace for while the new material grows with the dark blue of the new Hivefleet parts of the old remains. Hence, the warrior being nicknamed ‘Scar’ by the local IG.

Also, we had to write a background piece for the units we were painting.

"The Hormagaunt brood were seeded onto Planet X (I have no idea where we are fighting) as part of the initial invasion wave. They are hard working despite almost always being shot to pieces before getting to combat with the enemy and often times being utterly destroyed when they do. Still, they maintain a plucky do-or-die attitude to life.

In their down time they enjoy nothing more than a game or two of Rummikub.

The life of a Hormagaunt isn't all fun and frolics. They perform regular volunteer work for the Carnifex Preservation Society. This charity tries to help the many unemployed Carnifexes who have fallen upon hard times in the current codex.

Many of this poor souls have mental health issues, insisting that they are actually Tervigons or T-Fexes. But the kindly Hormagaunts of the CPS do their best to bring them comfort and rehabilitation where possible.

Once upon a time there was a lonely Biovore. He was sad because his brood mother had often told him the stories of the Three Little Biovores, The Biovores Gruff and the Three Blind Spore Mines. While this might have seemed slightly insensitive of her, he did have the company of the Spore Mines but it wasn't the same.

He longed for the day when he would rain bio-weapon death unto Space Wolves and Eldar alike in the company of his own kin.

Yet he wandered, sad and grey, through the world and although the other Tyranids would always greet him with a cheery 'halloo!' he remained very much the Eeyore of the Hivefleet.

Then one day while he was mooching around the recycle pool he stumbled upon an arm similar to his own. Could it be that there was another Biovore? Excitedly he began to search for more limbs. Perhaps the Norn queen could rebuild this long-lost brother if he could find all the bits.

The Lonely Biovore found a leg and the body of the missing Biovore. He found a number of Spore Mines, too.

What he found next astounded him for it was not the remainder of his brother but a complete new Biovore still in his egg.

Once the Norn Queen had assembled this new Biovore it was clear that he was much younger than the Lonely Biovore but they were both very happy to see each other even though the first Biovore did feel slightly goofy when standing next to his larger and more dashing brother.

The new Biovore looked at the parts that his older brother had gathered and said, "There must be a third one of us like you. We must find the rest of him!"

Well, the two Biovores set off and found the missing arm and leg - in fact all the bits except the head. So they decided to ask the other armies if they had seen the head.

They asked the Necron, which took quite a while as they rambled a lot and when off-topic a great deal. The only topic they wanted to talk about was something called a 'Ret-Con' which was apparently quite horrific but neither of the Biovores understood it, despite the best efforts of the Spore Mines to explain things.

But the Necron did not have the head so the Tyranids went to the Sisters of Battle but they were no help, either. Instead they were too busy being smug because they were all painted and uppity about being made of lead, not this white metal stuff. But they did suggest the Biovore Brothers try the Dark Eldar because they were always after bits of other armies for trophies.

So, off they went but by now their hopes were not high. :(

The Dark Eldar did not have the head, either. "Why don't you get your Norn Queen to splice a new head onto your brother?" they suggested. "We do that kind of thing all the time."

This seemed like the only choice so the Biovores and their cloud of Spore Mines went back to the Norn Queen and asked if this was possible. The Norn Queen took several heads from the rebirthing chambers but they were either too small or too large.

"Well, this will not do," the Norn Queen said to the Biovore, "I am glad to have two of you but it would be better to have a third."
"But we have looked everwhere, oh Indecisive One, and cannot find our brother's head."
"Worry not, my little ones, I shall sculpt him a new one!" exclaimed the Norn Queen, ignoring the back chat on account of their emotional state.

The Biovore formerly known as the Lonely Biovore looked sideways at the New Biovore and said as polietly as he could, "Are you sure you couldn't just pick one up on eBay? There's an art to this sculpting, you know."

"I'm not forking out a five just for a head," replied the Norn Queen. "Besides, you and your brother are third edition metal Nids and even I can match that I think!"

The Biovores nodded mainly because they didn't have a choice but the formerly Lonely Biovore-as-was got the distinct impression he had just been insulted.

Over the next couple of days the Norn Queen began to build a new noggin' for the Third Biovore. The Not-So-Lonely Biovore would sit and be the model for this while the Youngest Biovore taught the Spore Mines line dancing. he insisted that this was actually a hidden fighting technique much like Capoeira or Morris Dancing.

Anyway, soon after the work was completed and the newest member of the brood had his brand new head which everyone agreed didn't look all that different and the slightly larger size suited him him, anyway.

So it came to pass that the Lonely Biovore would be joined by his new brood brothers and rain death upon Space Wolves and Eldar alike, no more to stand alone.

And yea, the Spore Mines did say, "Seriously? Who are we? Chopped Liver?"

The Trygon is an aloof fellow. Not for him the solace of a screen of gaunts or the companionship of a like minded brood. No, he ranges ahead of the swarm, bringing mild inconvenience to those who threaten the hive fleet and the joys of a large, difficult to screen target with no fething INV save."
