Hi guys, i wasnt sure where to post this. I apologise if this is in the wrong location. Im new to 40k and played only little of AoS as im not confident enough with the rules so far so any basic help would be appreciated. I just ordereed Talons of the emperor online in the hope that i have finally found the faction for me after bouncing around a few others for a while.

I was thinking of making a talons/Grey knights army, what should i be wary of with them i.e do they have weaknesses and what are they best against (presumably chaos)?
Seeing as the talons only contains Custodes and telepathica, what should be the first Grey Knights i pick up?
What common mistakes do people make while making an army?
Are talons and grey knights complementary or should i be looking elsewhere than grey knights for allies?
I was looking at a few named characters and i would any of the following be good to put in this sort of army: Inquistor Greyfax, Inquisitor Coteaz and Castellan Crowe. I realise the first teo are inquisition, but thought as this is a demon/witch hunter army then they could fit, or maybe they dont?
and as i final request, could any kind soul possibly just do i quick write up of what you would expect to see in a 2k point generic army of talons and grey knights, im not looking for indepth so no wargear, just mainly what units would it consist of. I think the contents of Talons was around 900 pts and it includes a sisters of silence squad, custodian guard squad, a venerable land raider, a null maiden rhino and a contemptor dreadnought
Thanks for all your help people

What common mistakes do people make while making an army?

I would say a common one is buying far too many models too quickly, especially before they have even played with an army!
This leaves them with a daunting pile of soldiers to paint and they might end up hating the way that the army plays after a few games.

My advice is just paint up the box you have and get a couple of games in, preferably with someone else new to the hobby.
Then you can look back on those games and make decisions based on your experiences, adding units to cover your army's weaknesses.

A lot of the fun in warhammer is gradually building your army whilst exploring and testing different units and lists against your opponents, jumping straight to the finish line denies you all of that fun!

What you'd get out of a Grey Knights/Inquisition/Talons army would be a very very elite force (meaning you'll mostly be outnumbered, but have super high quality troops) with a strong psyker and anti-psyker presence. Your strength would be countering psykers and your biggest struggle would be opponents with good anti-armor weaponry, or a cheap enough horde that your high quality weapons and attacks would be wasted.

You will mostly be operating at close range or in hand-to-hand combat, what I would recommend is to strive to create a mobile force that can fight where and when you want to.

My advice when constructing this army would be: Turn into the spin. Build a hyper-elite force that just shows up wherever it wants to be and obliterates its target.

Here's what I add up for 100 PLs (which is roughly 2k points, give or take):

Grey Knights Brother-Captain
Stormraven Gunship
Venerable Dreadnought
10x Purifiers
Venerable LR
5x Custodes
NM Rhino
5x Witchseeker sisters
Venerable Contemptor

All the GKs go in the plane, and obviously everybody else goes in their designated transport. The stormraven is nigh impossible to bring down in a single turn, so it can position aggressively to soak up enemy firepower. It lays down an unholy amount of fire itself, so it will hopefully scare your opponent into an aggressive play to try and take it out. next turn, everybody disembarks the raven, and hopefully the sisters and custodes were also positioned aggressively to join in the fun as well. purifiers with a BC put out an absolute crapton of mortal wounds, then let loose with whatever weapons you put on them, psycannons or incinerators, and the dreadnought charges in as well.

If it were me, I would actually modify the list to not use the custodes contemptor, but it should operate just fine with him. He's just not as fast as the rest of the list which is aboard transports, so he might struggle to make himself worthwhile. I wish GK could take contemptors so he could just be the dread aboard the plane but it seems they cannot.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

I would suggest you start by building no more than a 1000 point list and get a feel for how they play, then expand as you see fit.

Thank you for your help folks, really appreciated.
Just a few questions regarding the list.
1) if you were to cut the dreadnought, what would you put in its place.
2) would you arm the sisters with their swords or bolt guns? And the same for custodes- spears or blades?
Thanks again guys

I'd probably take sisters with flamers, I think they'd be more useful than either bolters or swords.

For custodes, Definitely sword and shields. The spears are only a little tiny bit better than the sword, but the sword lets you take storm shields, which are amazing.

Grey knights are so fun to make. I made some in late 5th edition. Very satesfying models to put together, easy to paint. Power sword, storm bolter and psykick powers in one unit? Yes please. The terminators in particular where very good to make.

Just paint them grey, wash and drybrush them metal. Start sorting details after that.

Yeah, i always thought grey knights seemed really badass.
Thanks for painting tip, im not very good at it so thats a great help. I was planning to paint the custodians and sisters retributor gold, wash them in reikland fleshshade and then try to drybrush them with something like liberator gold. i usually only just base and wash because im not so confident with the rest but seeing as the majority of the armour is gold i thought i need to try something extra to make it stand out that little more. Hopefully im doing it right with those paints, as that was the colour i used when i painted the hammers of sigmar, but maybe thats too shiny/bright of a gold?

Try using a silver as a final light "dusting" drybrush. I find this gives the gold a sort of "blinding glittering" effect at the end, which really accents it.

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.

When I'm editing alot, you know I have a gakload of homework to (not) do.
