Because Pile in is optional now, it's perfectly viable if you have a wide spread bubblewrap unit, to not pile in, then take casualties such that you end up more than 4" (accounting for consolidate) from the enemy unit, thus dropping out of combat and leaving the enemy unit shootable and the back of your bubblewrap intact?

Totally. Take casualties from where you want! Can be the best way to disengage without further penalty in some cases.
