"If anything causes a unit to become split up during a battle, it must re-establish its unit coherency the next time it moves."

Does this mean if I don't move the unit in the movement phase I don't need to reestablish coherency? Again asking if I can let my bubblewrap chaff take casualties where I need them

It may not be following the spirit of the rule; but it is following the letter. In fact if your unit cannot make it into coherency; then they cannot move, per the designer's notes.

Tactically, as you have presented yoyr desires, leaving coherency-breaking gaps is not goibg to serve very well as bubble wrap without some pretty precise measuring in set-ups.

This is my Rulebook. There are many Like it, but this one is mine. Without me, my rulebook is useless. Without my rulebook, I am useless.
Stop looking for buzz words and start reading the whole sentences.

I had this question when my Ad Mech Kastellans got out of unit coherency while under the Protector Protocol (can't move). The answer I got was: they can remain out of coherency as long as they don't move, but the next time they move they must move to re-establish.

The AoS FAQ answers this question as no, you don't have to move, but if you do it must be back into coherency. I know AoS is not 40K but it's an interesting precedent suggesting rules writers' intent. The new FAQ for 40K even says you can't move if you can't reestablish coherency. So all signs are pointing to no, you can remain still.

For me, the joy is in putting some good-looking models on the board and playing out a fantasy battle - not arguing over the poorly-made rules of some 3rd party who neither has any power over my play nor will be visiting me (and my opponent) to ensure we are "playing by the rules"
