i like a lot of the marks and paint jobs from the heresy and earlier marines and was wondering if it would be weird to use them on a modern day marine.
think they would still be floating around?

i know the eye of terror plays with time yadda yadda but i don't want to come up with an idea only to have it poo pooed later.

for example, i like nurgle but have a weird thing with mutations, some of it i just don't like.
would it be completely off the wall to have some death guard painted pre-heresy with a few modern nurglefied marines mixed in?

same with world eaters.
if i wanted to paint up and model some units as pre-heresy and mix in a few modern guys would it be weird?

There will be the occasional TFG who will point out "hurr durr they didn't have MK7 armour in the heresy durrr" but frankly, who cares.

Then that TFG would be wrong lol, anywaaaaay, go for it, it looks quite good on certain legions/chapters, i plan on using my HH dark angels as fallen.

Hell, I am of the opinion that using Primaris Models as Truescale counts-as normal marines is fine (since the opposite is going to be forced on us come 9th edition anyway so might as well make use of it while you can). TrueScale Grey Hunters look awesome IMHO.

I mean, I'm pretty sure the models won't run away or melt or anything so...you're probably fine?

its not weird even a TFG couldnt complain, its 100% accurate, post heresy the Heretics only have available the armour , forgeworlds and personal they took over/with them, thus the armour that they have is what they will maintain With the warp and eye of terror, 200 years could be an earth day, or vice-versa, and considering how long a normal marine can live.. a warp fueled once can live even longer/shorter

The variatey and nature of gifts from the chaosgods, as well as how individual warbands react to them could well mean there are corrupted death guard/ nurgle with rusted but fully fuctional MK(*) armour! or even pristine as a parody of the corruption around them/that they bestow
or mixed in with new recruits with newer tech, or from raids and mix-matching to repair ancient tech
its chaos!

Totally fluffy, baring the warp you could have had them trapped in a tesseract labyrinth for 10k years like in the gathering storm books.

I find nothing wrong with it at all. Chaos Legions have been stuck in an unreality where time has no meaning and the gods make all kinds of weird changes to them.

Hell, I'm planning a Black Legion army with mixes of armor from pre Heresy, Chaos Marines and more loyalist bits. They scavenge their armor for repairs or trophies and the exposure to the Warp changes their armor too

Chaos offers unlimited possibilities for modeling.

I'll be painting my 40k Death Guard in 30k colours (I got 30k DG as an army). That'll allow me to mix rhinos and sicarans etc.
Gonna be great.

My friend does exactly this. He also has a pre-Heresy Mortarion that he recently painted up to use when the DG book comes out. He doesn't have wings, but no one here has had anything but praise for his Mortarion model, and everyone is really looking forward to facing it.

My 40k Ultramarines are exclusively in Mk. III armor, mostly because I love the look (sci-fi knights). Lots of Heresy-era armor marks exist in numbers in most Chapters, according to fluff, so no reason not to kit out your army.

I remember reading somewhere that the world eaters never repainted their armor, it's just so encrusted with blood that it appears crimson red. Unfortunately that doesn't account for the brass trimmings. But at least you could say you have World Eaters who just decided to polish their armor.

I've done exactly this with my Emperor's Children. Initially to facilitate a 30-40K cross over as much as possible, although with the advent of 8th the two systems are diverging to the point where clever "counts as" isn't quite as easy as it was (but still working on it) but mainly because I much prefer the purple/white/gold over the black and pink.

Head canon wise, they're scouring era, and not completely corrupted by chaos, which means I don't use full Chaos kits but a hybrid of SM/CSM and some HH stuff from FW to tone down the spikes and horns everywhere aesthetic in favor of something less full on, but with enough chaotic bits, decals, weathering and the occasional flayed corpse or skeleton to make sure they don't get mistaken for no loyalists.

FWIW, the new CSM Codex has colour plates of the different Legions and different individuals from various warbands, and in almost every case there's an almost normal pre-Heresy "not Chaos" guy, so if you get any flack, there's actual GW Official art that supports your idea.

As others have said, it's a completely fine thing to do, it's not like every Chaos Legion repainted their armour the day after the Heresy ended. I've been painting my whole CSM army in Heresy-era colours and have never gotten anything but compliments in the LGS about it. For a flavour of what Plague Marines look like in the Heresy era colours here's a snap of my DG --

So long as you are not trying to use your MK7's and 8's as the body of your 30K army there is no real issue.

I think you'll find that's not an issue for many either.

In the grand scheme, I'd rather face painted Mk8 in an HH army than a sea of unpainted but period correct grey.

But, ultimately, as long as I can tell what's what, how my opponent decides to hobby is none of my business.

Chaos Space Marine dedicated to Slaanesh

That's exactly how I'm doing my Emperor's Children.

If the model is "modern" like the chaos marines box or a forge fiend, it gets the full black/pink paint job.
If the model is "archaic" (Mark IV or something), it gets the purple/gold paint job with one arm and shoulder pad as black/pink.

My thought is that much of the older armour would still have the traditional colours, but they'd show their allegiance to Slaanesh with the black/pink arm markings. Kinda like the Deathwatch does.

Plus, Purple/Gold and Pink/Black go nicely together. :-)

Cheers!
