I am very curious, while orks are very fun now, I rarely win and they are constantly dieing to gun fire, so I am wondering what people are doing with them that I cant seem to figure out.

Orks - 4,300
Ironjawz - 1500
Morats - 1700
Skorne - 530

Try running 6 units of 30 gretchin backed up by 6 runtherders with squig hound. That's 180 wounds your opponent will have to kill.

Whatever you do, don't do this.

The only known competitive Ork list is something like 180 Boyz and characters for the rest. The characters should include two warbosses on bikes, two Weirdboyz (one with jump one with warpath). Taking ghazghkull is also a great idea, and Grotsnik if you like. All boss Nobz should take big Choppas. Don't bother with squad heavy weapons as you will be advancing every turn. Kustom force fields are optional. This list is known to work.

Yeah...

I mean Space Marines hit on 3's and wound on 2s. Don't do a Gretchin army.

Competitive builds I've seen include a large amount of Boyz or a large amount of Walkers.

Gargantuan Squiggoth is good too as it's a lot of points for one drop that can carry HQ choices and assist in going first.

Its not that 180 orks are good, its just that movement takes that long your opposition wanders off to jump from the nearest overpass rather than continue.

I've heard some people say the various big guns are still worth using to support the big mess of boyz but can't confirm. Storm boyz are mentioned as an alternative to get close faster.

Yes, that is another thing: Make movement trays, or use a cardboard cutout to move an entire squad at a time.

It will still take a long time, especially because many of your Boyz will move in the movement phase, then again in the charge phase, then twice in the fight phase. It can be exhausting.

Since boys are really good this edition you need a lot more than in previous editions and they will do most of the work most of the time.

Characters to buff (Warboss, Ghazi, Wyrdboys, Doks, Banner, KFF Mek)

Some fast stuff to tie up enemy shooting / make additional pressure (Kommandos, Stormboys, (Nob) Bikers, Koptas)

A bit of shooty stuff to do extra demage / weaken stuff / camp on objektives. (Big Guns / Mek Guns, Lootas, Tankbustas)

Nobs with ablative ammo runts are also very good.

Trukks and wagons are more durable but all the enemy weapons do more demage now.
KFF is a must take, few drops also help to get first turn and move at least 1-2 times before loosing your stuff.

This is what you will see with most competitive lists nowadays.

Going for shooty / speedfreaks / other builds means you need to spam it to compensate the bad BS & hit modifiers / mass of antitank.
Not all that much a nobrainer like green tide but still playable. Mixed lists have a hard time though.
Playing Maelstrom helps a lot and adds to competitive ork gaming.

What are you playing with mostly?
Fast stuff to tie up gun lines helps a lot and you can get in CC pretty fast in 8th edition in numerous ways.

In tournaments you'll see 180-240 boyz, 2-5 weirdboyz, 0-2 big meks with kff, 0-2 grotsnik/painboy, 0-2 nobz with waaagh banner, 0-2 ghaz/warboss. Pure greentide plus supporting characters.

Tipycally 2x battallions and eventually with also the HQs detachment.

Yeah how the fekke do you reach turn five playing against that, I'd be shocked if you got to turn three before the venue shut for the night.

Kustom Mega Kannon Mek Guns are the only viable ranged Anti-Tank orks have, even if they do bleed VP.
