Hey guys, the name is DevilsKread
I'm currently edging my way into warhammer after a friend introduced it to me. After playing a few games of Tyranids, I want to design my own army and start collecting. I'm looking for a army I can write
a really developed background for such as my own space marine chapter or ork tribe. I'm not looking for an army that is competitive just fun to play and follows my armies tactics well. I've had a few ideas
but my friend has said that some of them aren't possible due to lore reasons.
===========================================================================================================
A space marine chapter called "The vindictive lions" where the chapter master has intimate relationships with an imperial guard Commander
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Vindictive lions are descended from the Iron Hands chapter being formed during the 41st millennium after their Chapter Master led a glorious crusade against a rebel army, defeating the foe and bringing an entire sector back into the light of the Emperor. The Vindictive Lions feature mostly a pure Gene-seed however there are known individuals within their rank that have recieved a mutated seed, though the reason is unknown.
They loosely follow the Codex Astartes featuring a unique organization along with being a primarily fleet based chapter, they are constantly warring battle against all forms of xeno who wish to destroy the imperium. The Vindictive Lions prefer close combat, feeling blood spray from their enemies and crushing their lifeless corpse under boot. The Chapter refuses to allow librarians into their ranks, the reason why is unknown and no exceptions have been made to this date.
As the Vindictive Lions are a fleet-based crusading chapter, their actual number of battle-brothers is unknown and according to their chapter master their full strength has never been fielded. The Lions are friendly with a number of smaller space marine chapters and imperial guard regiments most notably being The Kunova Regiment led by Commander Ivanka who appears to have a intimate relationship with the Chapter Master but this is just stipulation.
During the first 50 years after it's creation, the chapter lost a considerable amount of forces fighting tyranids from a splinter fleet, this caused all members to harbour deep hatred for any tyranid related being and enjoy nothing more than wiping them from existence.
===============================================================================================================================================================================================================================
A coalition of Tau cadre's called "The Blacksun Coalition" where the leader is a war fanatic and renegade
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Coalition was created by a tau fire warrior known as Shas'la Tau lur'tae'mont ,or Fire Warrior Madness. His fellow fire warriors gave him this name due to the insane measures he would take to ensure "the greater good". However he believed that the etheral council wasn't doing everything in their power for the greater good and left his fellow warriors. After leaving he changed his name to Shas'O Gal'leath Mon'Shas'Ka, or Commander Blacksun.
Ea Va'ro'cha (The Great Minds):
"Ea Va'ra'cha", meaning "The great minds", is a council consisting of the strongest and most influencial warriors that recide in the Blacksun Coalition. In this council they discuss battle plans, promotions and other important matters, at it's head sits Commander Blacksun. The following consists of the current members of the council:
Commander Blacksun – Leader of the coalition and Commander of the Mon'Shas'Ka Lissera (Blacksun Cadre)
The council are also in charge of deciding if a Coalition member should earn a personnel name and as such use a majority vote to decide whether they are allowed to use this given name.
Cadres of the Coalition:
Ea Mon'Shas'Ka Lissera (The Blacksun Cadre):
Ea Kauyon Cadre (The Hunters Cadre):
Heroes of the Coalition:
Commander Blacksun:
Full Tau Name: Shas'O Gal'leath Mon'Shas'Ka
English Translation: Fire Caste Commander of the Explorer sept Blacksun
Role: Leader of the Coalition and Commander of the blacksun cadre.
Earned Personnel Names:
"Blacksun" was earned after the commander flew into the sky blacking out the sun to deliver a ferocious charge against the greenskin menace that he faced during his first battle on Atari Vo's and his first battle as a commander.
Backstory:
Commander Blacksun is a self proclaimed Tau Commander fantatic, who will do anything to achieve the greater good and as such Blacksun created his own Coalition in which he would command a huge military force. To achieve this, he has been travelling throughout the galaxy to recruit Tau soldiers in the name of the greater good, often staying clear of typical Tau septs as they don't like fantatics or renegades like Blacksun.
Though he is a fanatic, many see Blacksun as a military genius and join him in battle, hoping to earn glory and fight for the greater good.
===============================================================================================================================================================================================================================
I like playing both defensive and offensive armies and would prefer to have atleast 2 detachments for fullfilling this role, such as 1 detachment that attacks enemy controlled objectives and 1 detachment that
defends my own objective. I understand that this will be a large force over 2000 points eventually however I'm more into the making a strong lore based army compiled of multiple detachments. I enjoy the
look of all the armies except Necrons and am enjoy playing them. I'm hoping to find an army that allows me to create my own force with tons of my own written lore.
Can you guys give me any tips and tricks when choosing this sort of thing.

I think its fair to say you can do almost anything you like, there is enough room in pretty much all factions that damn near anything is possible, especially now since the imperium is in turmoilt after the great rift.
That said, Im not sure that astartes would work well in a love/relationship story. Far as I know they are so far removed from sexuality and romance and will only ever know two relationships; To the Emperor and to their chapter brothers.
Remember that these dudes are fanatical monks.
Then again, I dont know much about 40k lore so Im probably wrong
Personally I chose Imperial Guards as my first army simply because they have the biggest balls of all known sentient life in the entire universe.
In a time of demonic invasions, morbid gods, superenhanced supersoldiers and fantastic hightech machinery, to go to war as "just a human" clad in the cheapest armor the imperium can conceive and armed with what could relatively speaking be referred to as a BB gun is just...awesome!

Hey Soulless, I think your correct when saying that space marines don't really understand relationships however I was under the impression that the reason for this is due to their gene-seed,
how they were raised and what biological parts were removed during the transformation. If a mutation changed something physically such as a new or missing organ then couldn't it change mentally as well??
As for Guard, they do sound really awesome, I love the idea of having a line of infantry sitting infront of huge artillery pieces that destroy everything on the field, or is meant to
I'm just not sure that their offensive game is as strong which is why i was thinking about putting in a space marine detachment as a offensive strategy if that's allowed.

That Tau guy would work better, in my view, if he was part of the Farsight Enclaves. He'd be a 'loose cannon' Farsight could explore against the worst enemies of his Enclaves, like orks and nids.

Hey Vector Strike,
I did look at what others think about the tau and i found that most people believe the Tau to be a mobile army. In my opinion this isn't the sort of thing I was looking for
unless you know a way to make a more defense based tau detachment. I would love to hear your ideas on this.

Im not sure either but it has been my thought that while the genemodifications of the astartes might aid in suppressing their human instincts and urges, its actually their indoctrination and lifelong training that puts their minds on the path they have.
I just dont find it plausible in the 40k universe that an Astarte would ever deviate from their lifelong honorable path to do something as selfish and primitive as romance and intimacy.
Astartes are supposed to be the rolemodels, the moral and physical image of perfection, to inspire the "normal" humans around them and show them what could be. Love, compassion and pleasure is not reconciled with such persona.
Unless of course praying to the god emperor and the omnissiah to make sure your bolter never faults and your armour never cracks, such honors are to be considered a privilage and a pure pleasure to any living member of the imperium!
But then again, the imperium is a rundown steaming pile of garbage so you could probably find anything around its periphery!
And you can absolutely ally Imperial Guard and Space Marines, both the rules and lore supports it! Though Im not sure what the new codexes might change regarding strategems and whatnot if the armies are mixed in such ways.

Considering how much Space Wolves love drinking and eating I wouldn't say that Marines are incapable to have other sorts of fun. (Didn't Ragnar Blackmane have some kind of almost-relationship with a female Inquisitor?) It all depends on the chapter and if you want to make your own you can do pretty much everything.

Slaanesh is all about pleasure and excess, so, you could have a space marine chapter veering towards chaos - unknowingly descending into madness. This might explain the chapter masters newfound lust.

The other issue with an intimate relationship in that chapter is they are descended from a chapter who disdains the weakness of flesh. Thematically it is even further from the realm of plausibility for an Iron Hands successor than your average SM chapter. With the fluff you've given and its focus on bodily sensation, and my understanding of the IH, I'd actually shift them away from being an IH successor entirely as the IH is all about purging the weaknesses of the flesh and blood body.
Even after the shift I'd still not have a romance going on, it just doesn't add anything to the narrative unless you're trying to show that the chapter is essentially renegade or turning to Chaos (as Lancelot suggested) (which is how they'd likely be seen if that relationship got out). If there's no purpose, it's kind of like in Transformers: There's no reason for the love interests, they add nothing to the story generally, they're just awkwardly forced in.
That all being said you can keep the lore as it is and ultimately do whatever you want with it, but as you've said you're new I'd make sure to read very heavily into everything you can scrounge up on the founding chapters before choosing who to be a successor of, and I'd read up on everything you can about the mentalities and daily lives of SM. I think you'll be most likely to be happy with the long term results if you do so.

You can, but it's not their best asset (Astra Militarum do defense-based firebase, aka 'gunline', much better than Tau).
For a 'gunline'-style Tau army, you'd want Firewarriors, Ethereal (Aun'Va is even better), Cadre Fireblade, Kroot, Pathfinders, Stormsurges and Broadsides, mostly. We have some specific fortifications (Tidewall series) that can move.

Thanks for all the great information guys and sorry for the late reply, I have been at work.
As for the Iron hands thing, I just randomly picked a chapter. I had no idea they didn't like flesh it was mainly just showing the possibility of a romance. The idea of CSM seems cool however most of the slannesh models I have seen are mostly purple and I'm not a fan of that colour. So would probably paint them black & red, as for renegade IG how would one build them. Is there any starter sets or unit boxes for them or do you just use the normal IG and somehow convert.
Again thanks for all the help guys, it's made it easier getting into the hobby definitely . Hopefully you guys will still help me

Thanks BaconCatBug, I think I'll go CSM and Renegade IG then. Though I'm not sure how I'm going to make my guard look like renegades. Anyway thanks everyone for your help, it really helped me decide what Im going to play.

Ignore your friends saying what is fluffy, and what is not. Make your own army lore, and have fun.
That said, please understand that unless you're doing Narrative play (Matched Play is the balanced, and most common mode), you can't use armies with mixed races - mixed factions are fine, as long as all units contain a singular unifying keyword (Imperium, Chaos, Aeldari, etc).
Finally, understand that this is not a cheap hobby - expect to spend some serious cash getting started, especially if you want a lot of options early on.
Lastly, it is critical that you also understand that this game isn't balanced very well at all - at least, not with Index armies. Codexes are coming, but it will be a while before your favorite faction gets one. Xenos generally get the short end of the stick, compared to the Imperial soup faction.
If you're ok with spending money and having a... less balanced game then we'd all like, please jump on in! The universe and lore is fantastic.
Orks are bottom tier right now; I love the green bastards the most, but I can acknowledge their shortcomings (can't handle armor, can't handle fliers, zero shooting capability, Green Tide (150+ Boyz) is the only viable army until the Codex).
I'm not trying to be a doomsayer - it's just important that new players are aware of what they're jumping into.

I say do them both, but keep your expectations flexible.
That said, the advice to steer away from your original chapter choice, and towards a warp-tainted near-chaos slaaneshi themed collection sounds most interesting.
Also, there is some great advice here regarding the actual collection for the Tau, which I think is pretty cool.
Different leaders will have different philosophies about which force is most effective, and maybe your guy has different ideas than others but go for it.
At the end of the day, it is you and your beverage staring at your models on your shelf in the dark - just imagine what you want to see there and make it real.

Hey guys,
Okay so I've been doing some thinking and looking at models but haven't been able to decide which one to pick. I'm trying to choose a Chaos Lord model but find the GW ones to be lackluster compared to other models.
Something like this would be amazing
but obviously more chaos like. For weapons I like the idea of dual Chain axe's for my lord. If anyone know any models that would work for this it would be much appreciated.
