Basically title.
It seems like Plasma does Grav but cheaper and better, with a higher Strength.
You could roll a 1 for the damage or be up against 4+ armies and Plasma would be stronger in both cases.
Don't get me wrong, Grav needed a nerf after 7th but I feel like Plasma overshadows it far too much (also Melta but Melta has its benefits such as AP -4 and D6)

If you are speaking grav guns, yes, they are much worse than plasma equivalent, due to low strength and shorter range. But for Grav Cannons, it still has a wider spectrum of viable targets.

Grav Cannons are definitely still viable against multi-wound models, especially vehicles and monsters. Grav guns? No thanks.

Agreed.
Grav-cannons are viable.
Gravguns however? Not so much. Just go with plasmaguns.

The cannons are probably the best heavy for a tac squad, and good on devastators if you have Las cannons somewhere else in the list. Even if you move, 4 shots should get two hits, and it is very good at killing heavy infantry. Having any kind if rerolls also helps tremendously.

I agree with the consensus. Grav guns are overshadowed by plasma guns, but grav cannon are great. They're especially good weapons for Tactical Squads, as the cannon are decent at firing on the move and the squad wants to move up into their 24" range.

Agree with everything said above. Another point is that Grav Pistols can be worth it on characters. 1/36 is much riskier when it is potentially killing your warlord or a critical buffing character (This is assuming reroll). At 1 point different I find myself jumping back and forth between them.

It's not the fault of Grav. Grav would be decent for its points. It's the fact that GW has made plasma so cheap. Take the Guard Granade Launcher as another example. 5pts compared to 7pts. For 2pts you get +1 strength, 2 better ap, an extra shot at 12" and if you desire, the ability to increase strength and damage by 1, at the risk of losing a model, a risk dramatically decreased by one of half the characters in the game being within 3"/6"/order range.
The ability to upgrade to 2 damage is huge in itself, but the ability to upgrade to st8 is a massive option. It means only half as many shots will fail to wound T4 and it makes them far more damaging against T7 and T8, which must be well over half the vehicles in the game. A Missile Launcher pays through the nose for the variability between frag and krak, a plasma gun pays nothing for this.
Look at Elysians for example of how brokenly cheap GW have rated plasma - 14pts per command squad plasma gunner Deepstriking where they want is a terrifying prospect. 12pts for a Deepstriking grenade launcher is not. The undercosted points values of plasma guns is why every man and his dog has lots of them in their list and why the vast majority of Imperial and Chaos netlists spam them.
You could literally make a list with just plasma guns as the only upgrades and it would have a very good chance of being a top top list. So in a long winded rant - not really gravs fault itself.

Are grav guns worth it?
Short answer: No.
Long answer: Nooooooooooooo.
Grav Cannons are, effectively, souped-up Heavy Bolters. They've got good RoF, good AP, and bonus damage that makes them very potent against Terminators, Custodes, Meganobz, or anything else that's T4 multiwound with a good save. Pricey, but can really lay down the hurt.
