I really want to start an ork army in the near future, but I want to do something that will set them apart from the average hodgepodge of normal GW models, so some conversions are in order! below are some ideas I've been kicking around, please let me know what you guys think, and which seems most interesting to you:

1.) freebootaz. Ever since dawn of war 2 came out, I've been in love with freebootaz. Flash gitz were already a unit i liked fluff wise, but bluddflagg was just such a great character it really hooked me. A long while back, I had toyed with the idea of making a flash git centric army with kaptain badrukk, but abandoned the idea in 7th. Now that 8th has come around, and my blood angels army is almost to the point that I don't want to buy any more models, This idea has been interesting again. It's the least conversion-intensive, being mostly head swaps and using as many "sword" choppas as possible instead of "cleaver" choppas. The transports would be different pirate ships (such as eldar raiders with a bit of extra gubbins, or other models), and would allow for some additional bling with gold being a color orks wouldn't normally use that much.

2. snakebitez. So, alot of those fantasy models look really good. I've always been a fan of savage orcs, but (not having much interest in playing fantasy or AOS), never had a way to use them. With the release of the Ironjawz, I really want to find a way to fit them into an army. In addition, the boar boyz and gore gruntas make easy conversions for bikers and nob bikers too while being more affordable. The problem i see here is that since it'll be heavily counts-as, it may be confusing for my opponents (which one of the different fantasy models is your burnas again?), and i feel that would make a game kind of annoying to play both for and against.

3. american orks. this is a thing i've always wanted to do, but whenever I bring it up, i get talked out of it. Basically, ww2 themed american orks. Slightly-less-cobbled-together blood axes, with alot of red-white-and blue details. According to everyone i've ever met, it's a stupid idea, and i should go with something else. It also opens a similar door (though less pronounced) as the snakebitez, since it would include alot of ww2 kit conversions.

4. other, something else, or a mixture of the above.

Go with Freebootas. Then buy Dark Eldar Raiders to convert up your trukks and battle wagons so that they would look like hovering pirate ships. You can even tie one of the Dark Eldar to the bow of the ship like a mermaid or something.

EDIT: alternatively, if you go with Snakebites, might I suggest animated rock golems used in place of Deff Dreads? It's something I wanted to do but never got around to it (that and I can't find enough guns).

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.

When I'm editing alot, you know I have a gakload of homework to (not) do.

There is not such thing as "stupid idea" for an ork.
I've seen the red army orks and they were hilarious.

There's really only one option and that is a Mad Max Fury Road theme.

Because if you are going to die, it needs to be historic on the fury road. Remember you are awaited in Valhalla, all shiny and chrome.

You can always go with all three. Three smaller forces of orks each led by a boss joining together for fun and plunder.

Choose something personal to you. Sports mascots or cities of origin are common themes. Historical armies as Koooaie said are also common from Soviet Orks (there are definitely alternative heads available) to Communist Chinese Grots to Mid Century German. Star Wars. All looted army. etc.

For my army I chose my alma mater, the University of Arkansas. Therefore my orks are in my old school's colors....

The Orkansaw Razurbax.....

surely the fantasy Kharadron Overlords models would make the best transports....they are already flying ships!

I'd say go with your Freebooterz or really go to town as the american one....it would look great if done well.

your mind

Given that Blood axes originally conveyed a brown/blackshirt aesthetic, and given the amurikkan fascism on display the world over today, this captures the near-side parody that infused the early 40k with charm and light. go this way, with flags and icons and all patriotic vitriol, propaganda horns and infotainment gorkanauts with big speakers and goff rockas on stage to sell the next war. God blast Waaaghmurikka bro!
