I play space wolves. I am looking for an army to ally with. I was considering grey knights or Death watch as new pieces to add.

any thoughts on which one is more viable? I know Grey Knights have a new Codex which may swing it in their favor. Ive never played either.

thanks for the support

Fluff wise, Deathwatch. Logan had a spat with the Inquisition and Grey Knights when they wanted to purge the citizens of Armageddon for seeing daemons (or some other world, can't remember that detail) that apparently resulted in both sides open firing on each other. The recent Warzone Fenris incident only soured relationship between the two.

In terms of pure rules though, Grey Knights generally bring close combat and psyker boosts. While I dunno about the situation of your psyker support, Wolves are generally pretty good in close quarters.

Finally, Deathwatch and Wolves are both still using the Index so you won't need to get another book for some time.

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.

I love the concept and idea of Deathwatch. I love the stylization of them and the gear. I hate the implementation and restrictions in the 8th index for them right now.

Deathwatch is pretty limited on what it can take. The flip side is their kill teams are nice. I really feel their special ammunition rule should apply to any bolter weapon on a Deathwatch unit. Hopefully the codex addresses this. Currently, it does not apply to Heavy Bolters, Storm Bolters, and several others.

If you are only looking for a small detachment, they aren't bad, though. I just really wish they were more fleshed out and want to see the codex. They are just incredibly limited right now. They can take some other units that aren't in the Deathwatch index, but the issue is they really aren't "Deathwatch" units. Nothing really separates them from being just a normal SM unit. Again, I think the special ammunition rule applying to additional bolters would fix this. Or possibly even allowing a wider range of options like Deathwatch Shotguns or Frag Cannons to be taken by a larger number of unit types.
