and this is not the best tau list ever.
stealth suits are so 2001.
and how exactly could you possibly think those two broadsides are better than another railhead? drop them and use your points to make all 3 railheads with sms.

Actually, the ASS and fixed shield drone rules have done a lot to make Broadsides a viable choice again. Even if they're not your personal preference, they're at least good enough now to not warrant such a condescending response. It gives him more accuracy, more resistance to lascannons, and gives him a little bit better chance against Iron Warriors and the like. The configuration he's got looks pretty standard to me. A hardwired target lock is optional if you can spring for it, but it's not a necessity.
I would switch out one of the Stealth units for another Crisis team, though. Then perhaps drop a Piranha to give the two Crisis teams leaders with Target Arrays, give the second Hammerhead a SMS and upgrade the Devilfish to a Smartfish.

I personally run 2 BASS and 2 Railheads at that level, and its is much better than 3 Railheads. The reason is thus: Tau need to destroy all armour by about turn 3, otherwise we'll end up dealing with tanks as well as infantry, and that isn't good.
Now in order to do so, we need RGs that do not die or are put out of action to 1 lucky shot. Against BASS you need at least 4 shots to do so. Plus with a greater accuracy and more shots BASS are better at killing slow moving vehicles like Preds or Russes.
With 2 BASS and 2 HHs your opponent needs to get at least 6 hits in order to completely remove your anti armour power, whereas with 3 Railheads he only needs 3. So if he chooses to try and kill the BASS, then the Railheads don't get shot at. If he goes for the Railheads, then he's unlikely to destroy the BASS.
Sure at 1500 3 RHs is still king, but not at 1750 and higher.
3 RHs is about as 2001 as 18 Stealth, IMO.

One big thing in the modern game that makes me still choose 3 rhs. Hammerheads don't make target priority tests on LD8, and don't take morale at all.

*shrug* I'd hit it.
Seriously, looks pretty good to me. But I like Stealth suits. I'd probably have one more squad of FCW in there for kicks (and not do the 'fish), but that's more a matter of taste than tactics. Me likey. EDIT: that is, once you've fixed the points issues.

The points issues raised leave me with a net of 10 pts, so I will definetely hardwire a target lock on the broadsides. That is an excellent idea that I hadn't thought of earlier. I'm going ot do the same with the crisis I think, and maybe give one 3 weapons and a hardwired tracker and target lock, so he can have a fusion gun. Speaking of crisis suits, should I have a unit of 3 or 2, and should I add shield drones to them also? The reason the second hammerhead has Burst Cannons is because thats what I have. I don't want to buy a whole new sprue just for the damn SMS. maybe I can find a cheap sucker to buy my hammerhead so I can just buy a new tank. I'm also thinking 3 Pirahnas is a bit much, I'd rather have another fire warrior unit or kroot unit, ie, drop a crisis suit and a pirahnna, add 10 more kroot and 6 firewarriors or something. Stealths are staying, they rock.

Units of 3 can have shield drones, units of 2 are probly better off JSJing as they'll do better hiding than trying to tank.

Personally I always go for 2 man teams with 2 Shield Drones, the exception is DSing Fusion (which I never use) and if i'm using MLs, then 3man is obviously better. The problem normally with 3 man units, is you have to take at least 2 Shield Drones to protect your investment, however the footprint of such a unit is huge, and it makes it very hard to JSJ around cover. But with 2 man teams SDs are also very important, especially if you, like me, face a lot of Fast / Tau vehicles, Dsing Asscans, Dsing melta/multi-melta, Dsing plasma, etc. Without SDs you'll lose those Crisis very quickly. The other advantage of having a couple of SDs, is that it sion't such a terrible thing to stand in LOS of a couple of lascannons for a turn while moving from cover to cover. Or the "oh gak, would never have thought that pred could move so far and still shoot !" situation. Yeah, my 2/100

Sweet list. It's exactly like mine, except I have one less piranha and one more BASS. I've been wrestling with the "dead weight" pathfinders for a while but I think the piranhas are a pretty decent choice given that we can't add anymore suits save for bodyguards. I'll miss my pathfinders, and I enjoyed using them, but alas they were never an active part of the list. Spend the extra points on a target lock for the BASS as well as a bonding knife.

if broadsides could all have multitrackers, plasma, ASS and shield drones I'd take'em. I'd maybe take a single team leader with 2 drones, stabilization thingy, hardwired multitracker. That'd be pretty spiffy. move and shoot twinlinked plasma and rail. yar.

Just give the TmLd a MT + t-l PR, then you have PR + 2 RG shots on the move.

I'm no fan of 2 SS units, more Fireknife Crisis is imo better (especially since you already have 2 mech FW teams, you really don't need that much pulse fire), but if it works for you, fine.
There's sometihng wrong with your Crisis. The Team should be 144pts, but you really don't need the Target Lock, so drop it and then the pts are ok again.
With the 30pts I suggest MT on both Devilfish and the correct pts of the Ionhead are 130, so that all fine then.
