Shangri-La

Classic thread. I know. SO many people coming back to ask these questions.... I've been playing Malifaux, Flames, and Hordes... However I recently took a job with 75% travel. I have been on an airplane more than 20 times in the past 2 months and it won't slow down. Normally this would be ok, but I go to some of the most out of the nowhere places at times. As such, I think 40k would probably be the easiest game I could find. So after 3 years of so not playing GW games, I'm looking at rejoining. I haven't played GW game since they killed fantasy. I haven't played 40k since 3rd edition. With me being a skirmish player, I'm looking at trying to make my initial purchase managable from a build/paint perspective.

So right now I'm in the UK for 2 weeks and figure while I'm out here would be the best time to invest. I'm even up for forgeworld considering I'm out here. Sure its more expensive but its now or never and I'll be able to get the VAT removed as I leave.

That being said I'm looking for help to accomplish a the following:
  • -Build a tournament legal/semi competitive list. I don't want to lose every game and I don't know what's good and whats bad with these indexes as the points and power index and everything is confusing me.

  • -Understand detachments better. Hopefully I can use this to my advantage?

  • -Build an army that can travel decently. I fly. I've flown 20 times in the past 60 days for work. This army has to fit in an overhead compartment and in that bag take a small beating.

  • -Has a decent amount of skin. being from Fantasy (pre-aos), Malifaux and Hordes background, skin has become sooooo easy for me. Skin and cloth comes easy, armor not so much. So I'd like to ease my way into painting armor so I can get better at it.

  • My current thought is perhaps renegade guard with daemon or marine help, maybe both? I'm looking into both forgeworld and independant models. I really like a few ranges that I'd like to try and make work, but I want to make sure I can/will use everything I buy. I havehad a tendency to collect way more than I need and then get overwhelmed and with a company sized army I want to prevent that. Especially as I haven't done a company style army since 7th edition
    fantasy?

I'm also open to other ideas/suggestions. I do like tyranid model range, but I'm concerned the travel would be hard. Same with Orks. I was hoping that I could use daemons as infantry with renegade tanks/etc maybe a few other models I like... Really just need help picking everything out and seeing how I can make things work. If I could get an hour or two with someone experienced on discord or on skype just going over some ideas and being a springboard and helping me with list building, and planning purchases... that would be huge for me. Thus I'm looking for some assistance. I don't know if this is the right place, but I'm getting no responses from reddit and refuse to use facebook.

    help?

Go for DISTRACTION CARNIFEX JAMBOURI and load up on Flyrants and Carnifexes. Nids travel just fine flatpacked and when built should travel fine if they are in a proper case. Just learn how to dowel your arms so you can disassemble them and you should be good to go.

use old one eye & carnifexes
his aura now applies to himself due to the errata change, so he is an absolute monster
screamer killer carnifexes (or just double scything talons without the bio-plasma) are pretty cost-efficient, too
and against GEQ enemies you just thresher scythe
(not with old one eye, never thresher scythe with him)
