I was perusing around the GW site the other and stumbled across the Varanguard and Chaos knights and was thinking of making a CSM army focused around bikes.

I would use the Varanguard as Chaos Lords on Bikes and the Chaos Knights as bikers. I brought this idea up to a friend of mine in my gaming group and he said that since there are no 40k horse models for chaos that they would have no place in the game. Mind you, they would have the same weapons and be modeled as such.

My question for you Dakka is that would you play against that army? I really want to do it, but what's the point if I can never field it.

Absolutely, it's a great idea.

Horses and knights absolutely belong in 40k because 40k isn't sci-fi. It's fantasy in space.

Alternatively you could use the space wolf army rules to create an all mounted chaos army with thunder wolf rules.

It's your army, your models, your game. It's up to you to do what you want with it as long as it's done well and consistently, there's no reason for anyone to have a problem with a concerned army.

I've never had issue with biker units being modeled as horsemen or whatever, so long as the army list in question doesn't already have mounted units confusing the issue. For CSM, it wouldn't bother me at all.

I completely agree, there's no reason a daemon horse can't be as fast and as tough as a bike.

The idea of using Thunderwolf cavalry seems really appealing actually, I'll have to look into that.

The only problem with that route is the lack of the 'Chaos' keyword and what not. But still interesting. Thanks!

You see plenty of rough riders done as bikers to better fit in with the Cadians. It shouldn't be an issue, although the Knights might lack a little bulk for Marines (Although not much, I would imagine).

You would basically be using a space wolf army represented by chaos models, not actually using chaos rules.

You could also sub in flesh hounds for fenrisan wolves if you are doing a khorne theme.

Agreed, seeing how bikes have combi-bolters I was thinking of replacing the arms with CSM arms with combi-bolters and maybe replacing the shield with a sword or something.

That actually sounds really cool and does fit the theme. I was going to make them Khorne-aligned renegades.

That actually depends on the tournament. You'll have to check with the tournament organizer ahead of time.

Your best bet though would be to make everything as consistent as possible and have everything represented in as close approximation as possible. Having good painting and conversions goes a long way too.

I had ITC in mind since they seem to be the largest? Is there anyway I can just email and ask them?

Lol mine too. I use them as chaos spawns in this edition though, they are modeled as pure melee anyways so it fits better. Plus even chaos spawn have decent speed.
