Let's say you have a squad of 5 Marines (M1-M5) and 2 squads of one grot (G1 and G2) and a Warboss(W) nearby.

M1_M2_M3_M4_M5
_______________
_G1____________
____W____G2___

You want to shoot a warboss but you can't as G1 is the closest to M1, M2 and M3 while G2 is closest to M4 and M5. Can you aim and shoot your marines one by one? Like M4 shoots at G1 and if he kills it, than M1, M2 and M3 can shoot at the Warboss as he is nearest to them while M5 shoots at G2? Or you have to choose the order of shooting before the shots are made? Like splitting fire between G1 and G2 but can't target Warboss?

I am assuming 5 marines are in same unit. Each single marine's shooting is sorted out independently, but you have to declare the targets and the split fire for the whole unit before any attacks are actually made.

Following this, in the picture presented by you none of the marines will be able to shoot at Warlord while G1 remains alive at start of shooting phase - All the shots need to have declared (legal) target already before G1 can die, and thus no one of the marines will be able to target Warboss legally.

For you to be able to do this thing you are asking, to shoot at warboss, you will need to have some marines in different squads, so they are activated after you have shot Grot 1 with one of the squads.

You wouldn't be able to target the Warboss with that Marine squad this turn. At point of selecting targets he's ineligible to be selected.

As Ghorgul says, a second unit could target the Warboss of the grunts were wiped out.

You check eligibility at the start before rolling to hit. After that, it's not checked again until you pick a new unit, so you'd have to use a 2nd unit to shoot the warboss.

The confusion came from the faq where they specified that pathfinders in one squad can benefit from markerlight's +1 BS applied by previous shots by this squad. And GW noted that shooting is now basically done on a per-model basis.

Thanks guyz!
