Crazed Spirit of the Defiler
|
I didn't see one come up in the search for the IV Legion, so I thought it might be worthy of its own thread, to keep the iron pure.
With the new goodies in the Chaos Codex, what do Iron Warriors players feel are the most crucial units for us to bring to the battle to stay competitive but remain true to the stratagems and tactics of our Primarch......
....and speaking of the Primarch, I think a Daemon Prince with the Fleshmetal Exoskeleton is my first auto-include, and not just because I made a super cool looking might-count-as Daemon Prince Perturabo someday. I aim to screen him with CSM loaded Rhinos, probably 2, and then a Dreadclaw as well with perhaps more CSMs but also maybe a Contemptor or other Helbrute type. With the Iron Warriors Warlord Trait the Troops wouldn't be running away! And I do think tac squads like that are important with objective secured being a thing again.
My next auto-include would be Hellforged Rapier batteries, definitely a trio of quad-heavy bolters, and probably also a trio of ectoplasma batteries, both of which just seem to be way better than Forgefiends for the points. Not ultra long range support, but quality and quantity shots.
Lastly, already mentioned the Dreadclaw with Helbrute or Marines. I think the drop potential backfield to ignore cover on those damn pesky scout types could be very key in many games.
What about Chaos Terminators? They can still be Khorne with an Icon of Wrath for the charge reroll. Or Obliterators? They have Assault 4 now, so I'm liking them a whole bunch more. A Bastion is also catching my eye, loaded with Havocs, probably missiles. Seems like Perturabo would also endorse the use of a Knight and/or groups of tanks (ala Killshot Predator trio). Would he endorse the use of sorcery? I'm thinking yes if it would help the win.
I know the IVth didn't get overwhelming awesomeness like the World Eaters or Death Guard will, so is that better reason to take the vehicles and Bastions, as they don't care about Legion Traits? What say you?!

Ancient Venerable Dark Angels Dreadnought

My plan is to take Oblits, Sicaran, maulerfiend and a few Rhinos filled with marines led by Daemon Prince. I also plan to have a Khorne champion in a rhino with 8 bezerkers, basically with the doors chained shut as the IW send it into the heart of battle!

Unhealthy Competition With Other Legions
Lost Carcosa

Its nice that with the Legion Tactic that anyone hiding their vehicles behind buildings with only the front tread sticking out still wont get cover saves. If you play on tables with more cover then LOS blocking terrain, then its even more useful. Otherwise that's about the length of its ability.
In terms of units, its basically the same as most of the rest of the Legions in the book.
Slaanesh Princes with Talons and Intoxicating Elixir can put up a lot of damage. If you take Fleshmetal Exoskeleton instead, you get some nice added survivability. Though with already being a Character, I think you can screen well enough for as long as is needed to go the more offensive route with the Elixer and do work.
Slaanesh Obliterators and Terminators can both take advantage of the double shooting Stratagem. So both units have strengths to their inclusion.
If you want a Havoc unit with heavy weapons, Heavy Bolters is a cheap and reasonably effective option. Ignoring cover + Veterans of the Long War + shooting twice with Slaanesh Stratagem is ok.
Basically, making anything with volumes of shooting that's Infantry Slaanesh for the option to double shoot is a good idea.
Which, all this is kinda the problem with Iron Warriors. Every Legion in the Codex except World Eaters can take these units and mark them as Slaanesh to gain access to its benefits. At that stage the only reason to be IW, from a competition standpoint, is if in your meta cover granting terrain is a lot more common then terrain that blocks LOS completely.
I was looking at IW more as a Spearhead Detachment addition to a list. Havocs with Missile Launchers that will ignore cover to vehicles and infantry equally. Shooting twice, if needed, for either 8 Krak Missiles or 8D6 Frag shots.

The units getting the most from the Legion Tactic would be Obliterators, Havocs, and the Cult Marines (outside Noise Marines which you purchased the Blasters for. And you did. Also Berkserker Marines, but ignoring cover with the Plasma Pistols is nice and I'm taking 3 in a squad so...), so I would focus on those units.

Dont underestimate our Warlord Trait.
The ability to create a cheap and fearless screen is priceless this edition, as you need a realiable protection against drop attacks/melee rush/ infiltrator.
40 fearless Cultist to make our deployment zone drop safe and screen our firebase for just 160 Points is extremely good.
Also that with the Tide of Traitors Stratagem and you can realiably drop a cultist blob in your enemys deployment zone or towards a objective midgame wich is also awesome!
