They're pretty similar visually, and the kits cost exactly the same. As far as on the table, how good is each? What are their differences?

Defiler heals, has more versatility, and with 4 attacks the scourge can be quite deadly. You pay for it all though (a bit less now with the new book). Actually since the new book you probably wouldn't take the soulgrinder until it has new points.

The grinder to me has always been a nicer looking model and offers itself to nice conversions but currently rules-wise and points wise the only option is Deffy

I would get the SOul Grinder model and use it as a defiler. Better kit overall imo.
