Subject: Suggestions, lore, and colours for an army of squats

If you know anything about me, you know that i really like to write lore for armies that i might eventually build.
I've already written a background for my much beloved order of sisters and for my slaaneshi warband, but the boredom made me decide to keep working on more armies, even if i may never be able to actually build them.
This day, i happened to stare too long at the Kharadron Overlords, a faction of dwarven warriors with a certain taste for business and steampunk power armors from Age of Sigmar.
You can see where i'm going with this, do you not?
If you saw any artwork of the Kharadron Overlords, you know that they are seriously perfect to be used as squats, and that's my intention: i want to work and make some lore and a colour-scheme for an army of the good-old space-dwarfs.
Now, before i start asking you stuff, i want to point out that it is lore-friendly to play an army of squats in the current events of 40k, since the old lore (you know, the one about the massive tyranid fleet eating the squats homeworlds) specified that some squats worlds remained but were just absorbed into the Imperium, no longer powerful enough to mantain their partial autonomy and remain a major race, yet some of them kept existing. While many would debate on the validity of this piece of lore, the lore of 40k is already confused enough as it is normally, making an argument such as this would be quite futile.
Now, i've researched some lore about the squats, read about their strongholds and leagues and other various stuff, the League of Thor being the most powerful faction within squat society.
The main problem in this case is that i found no colour scheme and, honestly, i'm not even sure if i should use them, since they are particularly colorful, since they existed only in the earliest editions.
So, in the end, i ask your suggestions for the followings:
Do you have some fun suggestion to add as detail to their lore?
Do you know any existing squat colour-scheme? If yes, should i use them or just drop them for something more grimdark?
If i will ever manage to actuallyt build the army, i was thinkig of using space marines rules, what model should i use as a dreadnought and how would you justify it lorewise?

For colours, casting my mind way back to the days when I first started - over 20yrs ago - drab green and red come to mind.
Kharadon Overlords were practically made to be converted into Squats, model wise.
Good luck.

Please note, for those of you who play Chaos Daemons as a faction the term "Daemon" is potentially offensive. Instead, please play codex "Chaos: Mortally Challenged". Thank you. |

The new big rift thing does all of your fluff for. You a lost Imperial fleet re-appearing after X-thousands of years lost.
No idea about the colours though. Squats are tough to run, but I'd actually take advantage of 8th to "create" your Squat force using a ton of Imperium proxies, since you don't need to use one army. They were more like tough, slow Imperial Guard originally.
What's bizarre is that while GW said they had a tough time figuring out how to put them into later editions of 40K they had quite a decent difference in stats to a majority of units. You could easily write up a Squat codex for 8th.

I would say bronze with gold'ish trim for the main colors. I would just stick with earth tones and metal colors. Lore wise gems and metals would be a focus. Maybe alchemy mixed in with some kind of armor suits or mechanic thing(Like Lucius the Eternal's backpack?). Maybe steampunk elements, Just try and focus on the things that make dwarves what they are too you and you'll figure something out.

They used to be oddball guard for the most part, but if I was to build them...I'd focus on the Hearthguard, and use Salamander Chapter Tactics. Then add in "counts as AM" using the Imperial word in a second formation.
