A buddy and I picked up 2 Imperium starter sets and swapped sprues. I took the Death Guard and now have a couple of questions regarding the 8th edition Chaos Marine Codex and the upcoming Death Guard Codex.

Finding myself in the dark regarding the Death Guard Codex, I purchased the Chaos Marine Codex. I could return the Chaos Codex and wait another few weeks for the Death Guard Codex along with the other model releases, however, would it be advantageous for me to keep the Chaos Marine Codex and purchase the Death Guard Codex with the idea of being able to create "hybrid" or flexible detachment builds from variety of factions? For example, if I were to select "Chaos" as my faction, could I not build a Battalion Detachment which would include Defilers and Heldrakes and still receive the +3 command points?

Please correct me if I have something wrong or if you have any ideas for me.

Thanks,
Mark

You have the right idea. The DG Codex will include some restrictions on the units you can take, so it might be a good idea to have the Chaos Codex around.

I say might be a good idea. We don't know what's in the DG Codex, there are going to be some new units that might make up for the restrictions we see in the Index.

If you plan on using any generic chaos units, it's probably not a loss to keep it. It's likely that pure DG won't be as good as DG detachment(s) + other chaos detachment (s).

That being said, if you want to just play DG, they have said the codex will be stand alone.
