Does anyone have suggestions for an alternative to GW's vinyl/nylon sculpting tool? So far my searches have come up empty.

Hit up an art supply store and look in their sculpting section. They'll have a ton of stuff there specifically for sculpting and it'll cost less.
While you're there check their paintbrushes out too.

You're looking for color shapers (also known as clay shapers) and they come in various sizes (like paintbrushes) and different firmness. Size 0 firm or extra firm will probably be the most useful.

Oh, I have brushes aplenty and clayshapers, too.
The soft spatula is what I was interested in, specifically. It's great for texture paint.
