I'm (finally) starting to paint up my Thousand Sons force and I don't yet have any vehicles. It seems like I need to add a few Rhinos at a bare minimum, but I'm stumped at the moment as to the best approach for our boys in blue and gold.

First, should I use the Imperial or Chaos Rhino as a base? Thousand Sons don't generally strike me as all that brutal and spiky in their aesthetic, so I'm leaning towards the cleaner base model of the imperial Rhino. But regardless, my question is how are people building/painting their Thousand Sons Rhinos?

The Chaos Rhino is simply the normal rhino with a chaos vehicle accessory sprue added on. If you want it to look cleaner, simply avoid some of the spikier bits. You'll still want the Chaos Rhino because the loyalist one only comes with a storm bolter, whereas the chaos one has Havoc Launchers and combi weapons (well, only a combi-flamer, but still). It also comes with Tzeentchian glyphs that you can glue on the hulls and warped dragon and gargoyle heads you can put on the vents.

more the classic red/gold look (not the even older magenta/gold look...) but wouldn't be hard to swap round.

Yeah, unless it's a lot more money - the Chaos Rhino can be built anyway you want. You can buy some aftermarket bits and make it into a magnetize Predator and Vindicator as well (get more bang for your buck).

That's extremely good info...I didn't realize it was the standard Rhino plus lots of different accessories. Sounds like that's definitely the way to go then. Thanks!
