I've picked up Games Workshop's basing tufts (the Mordheim ones) and they're really glossy - they look shiny on the bases and look very artificial. Is there a way to take the shine off them? What will happen to them if I give them (the the model they're on) a spray of varnish, specifically Purity Seal?

Thanks for any help.

Time to put one on a popsicle stick and find out.

Another option is vallejo air varnishes.. you can buy a matt varnish pot from their 'air' line of paints. It's thin so you can easily thin it more and paint it on. Put on a super thin coat, wait till it dries, add more coats as needed (wait for it to dry 100% though between coats).

Have you tried lahmian medium? I brush all my mordheim tufts with super glue to make them look frosty (tundra bases for space wolves).

I spray basic Krylon matte sealer over static grass and tufts all the time. Looks fine and locks it down to the base better.

I use Vallejo matt varnish, takes the shine off, and gives them a slightly frosted look.
