Hey all,

So I've been wanting to get into 8th, I have the new death guard models because I've always loved nurgle.. But I'd really like to have an ork army... Here's my thought / question.. Is it worth starting an army with slightly older models? I have the feeling GW is going to be scaling up models like they've done with the new marines. Obviously if they do update models it's going to be a very long time I guess.. So would it be worth starting an ork army now or should I just stick to the death guard for now until orks are updated?

Thank you,

Jamstrap

If you like the models, build the army. Tomorrow never comes....

I do like most of the models.. And that's a fair point.. I'm just worried I buy and paint and entire army for newer models to be released in the next year or so. Although I doubt it will be that quick anyway

Eh, that's always going to be the case with most armies. Even neglected armies get random releases every year or two. I built an entire Eldar army from eBay this last year and a half...all old metal Eldar models. They look great and the rules don't change because your models age. With established armies, like Orks, it's very unlikely you're going to get an army-wide re-release of a dozen kits.

I don't think we're going to see an across the board scale increase, if only because it would take forever and cost a fortune. The Primaris are clearly the new poster boys, but they are explicitly stated in the fluff to work alongside the current marines. Will we see new, old scale marines? Probably not, but all of their kits are plastic and pretty current.

Races like Orks are more likely to get new kits than replacements, as they still use ancient buggies/trakks.

GW never went broke trying to sell Space Marines, but right now, there isn't much they can shoehorn into the basic space marine book. The stalker/hunter at least had some epic roots, but Centurions were a complete rectal extraction. I think that focusing on genuinely new stuff, instead of "rediscovered" stuff makes sense.

As much as I think the new Nurgle stuff is neat looking, I am NOT making anymore Plague Marines. You see, I stripped and painted 40ish older PM models, and love the way the look.

Rules didnt change, and I prefer the FW Plague Marines even over the newer ones. So I am content using the older ones.

It might be worth waiting on the codex before investing too much into an army, but at the same time models might go up in price and be harder to find post codex so that's kinda a wash.

Thanks for the replies!.. I guess with an army like orks having a lot of different looking models doesn't look bad anyway if they did bring some newer stuff out. So ill probably look at the new nurgle models, if they blow me away or not will help me decide to add onto my few ork models.

Ork models look pretty decent and modern, outside of the few resin options we have. So an Ork army is probably not going to be aesthetically outdated any time soon, even if they get some new releases. Boyz are space marine sized, Nobz are primaris sized and I suppose if we get a new Ghaz he is going to be primarch sized or bigger. I don't believe they are going to shift the Ork scale significantly, if at all.

Why Aye Ya Canny Dakkanaughts!

The problem with Ork armies is that, by the time you've finished building, painting and basing your 300 odd boys and company, 40k will have finished and there'll be peace in the galaxy.

I wouldn't worry about it. Even if Orks suddenly get a whole new line of mega-Orks which are Primaris-scale instead of current Ork sized, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference in a mob of 30 from above the table anyway.

I think you're safe, and if you're not planning on going to ITC/LVO style events I am sure it wouldn't be a problem for your local players.

A Song of Ice and Fire - House Greyjoy.
AoS - Maggotkin of Nurgle, Ossiarch Bonereapers & Seraphon.
Bloodbowl - Lizardmen.
Horus Heresy - World Eaters.
Marvel Crisis Protocol - Avengers, Brotherhood of Mutants & Cabal.
Middle Earth Strategy Battle game - Rivendell & The Easterlings.
The Ninth Age - Beast Herds & Highborn Elves.
Warhammer 40k  - Tyranids.

Fluff wize, Orks grow with age and never stop growing. So even if GW releases new "Primorkis Boys" you can still take the older models as young boys.

your mind

When I collected my orks, I actually hunted down the old metals as well as the big metal cuz I like metal models, first off, and because I liked them when I played against them 25 years ago and never had them - I had panzy footdars. Still have the panzies, but the orks is bestest.

I have some newer plastic orks, and I run them in separate squads sometimes depending, but mix them where they seem to fit together.

I am really looking forward to the new buggies and wartracks and so on, and refuse to buy the older ones - though I did get hold of an ebay collection and cut up a buggy for terrain wreckage. looks awesome.

Anways, my advice is get into the models that you like, regardless of scale.
Frankly, I think that the game will either return to some sensible sense of size - too many huge characters and primarchs these days - or will go the way of the dodo. Who wants a 3thousand dollar paint by numbers finished in two turns big scrum in the middle of the board objectives don't seem to matter dice-fest free for all is a mystery to me, in the first place. I say collect the cool things first, paint and convert them to be proud of your collection while developing hobby skills, and play to enjoy the hobby as a whole rather than worry about how GW marketing is going to ruin the game trying to protect their IP with idiotic new names and 40mm 28mm"scale" models...

Great answers again. I'm definitely sold on not worrying about any of that now. I'll start looking where to start with the orks then.

One thing to remember is that jumps in scale aren't completely new, in fact, they've hit a lot of the armies we think of as old. Orks doubled in mass between 2nd and 3rd edition, while plastic cadians are a clear head taller than the metal brethren (as well as current FW resin). Even eldar are bigger than they were in 2nd edition.

The sole exception, somewhat interestingly, was space marines, who have inched up a bit, aside from a few noticible units (terminators). Even so, the primaris models dont' replace other units, but are an addition.

At this point you might as well not worry about gw updating models. They seem really disinclined to do anything of the sort. Occasional new releases and boxed games, book spam and just reboxing old stuff seems to be the business model now.

Efficiency is the highest virtue.

I think retro armies are cool. I did an all rogue trader army in 7th, with a few conversions, and it was met with appreciation. I say go for it!

My army is made up of my old rogue trader marines, plus an old rhino.

I have added to it with some of the new(er) assualt marines plus some vehicles as I am now almost 30 years older and have disposable income!

I have found that I can add the new arms to the old models by a bit of work with a craft knife so am adding things like combi weapons and such.

The RT era marines are quite small compared to most models on the board, but I like their simple style over the new models which can be incredibly fussy to paint for someone like me whose main brush is a spray can

If you ever play with "that guy" remember this :
"there may be times when you are not sure exactly how to resolve a situation that has come up during play. When this happens, have a quick chat with your opponent and apply the solution that makes the most sense to both of you (or seems the most fun!), If no single solution presents itself, you and your opponent should roll off, and whoever rolls the highest gets to choose what happens."
