I have give or take 3000p of Chaos Space Marines, and ive came to a point where I have at least 70% of the codex at my disposal. Is that enough? Should I start focusing on something else, or should I stop and save cash? Being Chaos, I have the option of taking Daemons (Khorne for me), so should I start looking at amassing Daemons as a secondary army?

I usually start with one of everything I want in an army (model wise for looks). If its an army I like I buy until I have all I want... If have all you want why get more? Your desires shouldn't be mitigated buy money, just achieve them with time

Edit: Sorry for multiple tenses\perceptions. However, I think is pertinent.

3k is where I consider an army of mine to be done and I move on to something else unless I'm building a specific list that requires more purchases. If I can smoothly and easily build a 2k list and lower, not just running the same list again and again, that army is a low priority on where my money goes.

If you do plan on branching into a second army then yes, daemons do compliment Chaos Space Marines well.

I've been playing a while, my first model was a lead marine and my first White Dwarf was bound with staples

Man, you can go all number of ways from here, but the question is really - what do you want to do?

I tend to build army lists of around 2000pts and then start collecting and painting until I finish it. Usually before I get there, something else interests me and I start buiding lists of whatever the next project is and try and finish what I've started before I get distracted. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't, but if I simply must work on my next project now then I at least try and alternate units of the previous army so that it eventually gets done.

I started off in Age of Sigmar and finished two 2000pts armies. I was about to start my next (Nurgle Mortals/Daemons) when 8th Edition dropped and I got too excited not to start an army. Thinking functionally, I knew I already had some Khorne Daemons, and I'd done a good bit of Nurgle Daemons, so I decided to play Heretic Astartes with some Daemon reinforcements, because playing just Daemons in 40K didn't quite feel different enough after AoS and I wanted some dakka in my 40K.

So, I built a list and painted my stuff. At about 1800pts, with just 20 Cultists and a Dark Apostle needed to finish the army, I got sidetracked again while waiting for the parts to arrive when I saw a good deal on a bunch of 30K Space Wolves. I've now assembled and I'm making my way through painting about 2500pts+ of 30K Space Wolves, and I haven't finished those Cultists yet (assembled, unpainted). Pretty much ever since I finished my AoS armies, I've been saying when I finish an army, I should really take a break and maybe do a Blood Bowl team or something less all-consuming. I still haven't gotten around to that.

The thing is, with 4 'full-sized' armies built to a very specific initial list, there's a lot of split interest. It's a weird thing. There's only so much time for gaming, and it's really easy to lose interest in any one or more projects for periods of time because you're infatuated with your current flavour of the week, be it an army or a game or whatever. Because I keep moving from big project to big project, I sort of force myself to 'finish' each and move on - and while there's usually things I'd like to change or expand upon in each, my attention is already elsewhere. I'd rather like to expand on my Blood Warriors in my Khorne Bloodbound with bigger units and special weapons, or finish painting my unit of Putrid Blightkigns, or pick up some Warp Talons for my Heretic Astartes, but I'm too busy focussing on getting my Space Wolves finished.

What I'm saying, is that nothing is ever enough and I'm an idiot. Don't be like me. I see shiny new things I want to do and I go for it and it consumes me until I finish it. Because of this, I never seem to stop and smell the hobby roses so to speak - I still haven't gotten around to a Blood Bowl team, or I still haven't painted my Blightkings unit that would give me a 1000pts Nurgle AoS army simply because I'm too busy with another huge undertaking. My only redeeming quality is that I don't have a massed collection of unopened boxes - everything I buy gets built, and at least 80% of the models I own are painted.

You seem like a nice, level-headed person with at least a little self control. I think the answer to your question can answered with a few more questions:

1. Are you happy with your units available to you to build an army list? Is there anything for CSM that you'd really like to have the option to field? Most of my armies are pretty much a set list right now - if I ever wanted to start getting a bit more competitive, there's not a lot of space to tweak things around. You could take this time to fill some gaps in your current collection.

2. Do you you really want some daemons for your army? Do the rules and/or the models excite you? I'll admit, I quite like daemons for the models and the fact they tend to be relatively easy to paint, but personally, I really recommend letting what you're passionate about dictate where your hobbying goes rather than what seems convenient. If you like daemons, it could definitely be worth getting a unit of something to run in your Chaos army and going from there.

3. Do you want to start a new army? It could very well be that you enjoy playing Chaos Marines and you're content with that. And that's great. You can add to it if you want/need/if new things get released, or simply enjoy the army that you've finished. There's always a million smaller projects you could fill your time with if you want more on your workbench - from Blood Bowl teams to upcoming Necromunda Gangs and Shadespire warbands. You could always convert and paint some fancier characters for your army.

Enough is when you are content. Too much is when it becomes problematic for whatever reasons. Figure out what you really want to do next, start small, and grow slowly, and try not to amass too much to get through at once. The great thing about having 2000pts+ of any one thing is that you no longer need anything to actually play a game, so take your time and do what makes you happiest.

your mind

If you have to ask, then yes, it is time to move on.
You can always add, later.

My advice is to do something completely different.
My first army was eldar heavy in harlequins from 2nd edition.
I moved to Space Marines for 3rd/4th,
and during the interim between that and 7th started building an inquisition/imperial collection to complement the marines.
After 7th, I built an ork army, pretty big by my standards and still growing but slowly.
As it is, I am excited to work on orks, for now, and once the inquisition get more support, will likely switch focus to finish off some of the models that I had collected and never even built, like a knight and a bunch of sisters in metal.

What I am trying to get across is that the variety keeps things fresh for me.
When harlequins got their new vehicles a couple years ago, I was able to pick up a few units and build them and slowly get them to the point that they are now, tabletop ready but needing refinement.

And, someday, I should be excited to give them the polish that they deserve.

When and if orks get new buggies and wartracks, then I will be ready to add them, and when and if inquisition get some new kits, I will be able to add a few of those to the existing.

The aim for me is to someday have a display around a gaming table with the potential to field any number of armies from the house collection.

Granted, I started on this 25 years ago.
But, if all goes well and I don't drink too much, I might have another 25 to go!

My god, I thought I had lots of Chaos Stuff, around 6000 pts now, but I keep finding that I'm short on stuff! I love so many of the models in the range that I want to field whole armies for each god, and that's going to take a long time to do . I just know that when I'm done with that, I'm going to collect some more basic marines to make an Alpha Legion army and/or a Night Lord army.

Depends on what you consider enough and how easily it is for you to gain models.

I have 10k+ of DE and Nids, not b.c im rich but b.c when i heavily collected those armies no one as playing them, Gants were so worthless for a long time that it was easy to talk people down on them.

I have 3k of SoB this only costed me about 250$, i love the models and when i saw a 1500pt army going for 150$ i had to jump on it even tho it was a 2hr drive, completely worth it.

For my KDK, i only have about 3k and that is for sure enough b.c i dont really play them.

Why Aye Ya Canny Dakkanaughts!

Enough is never enough! Drown in the excess!

I've been playing Chaos for my entire 40k career and have pushing 10k pts in CSM, Daemons and Renegades. I'd never dream of switching to a different army and I never will.

If your sick of CSM for now, try Daemons or Renegades; that's what I did when I got bored of my CSM army, I now have about 2000pts in Daemons and 1500pts in Renegades.

When Orks have enuf dakka, you'll be close.

One does not simply mark "enuf" in the 40k lyfe.

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.

For me and Tau models. Not until I have my hunter contingent done a decade from now.

My other armies will top out around 2-3k though like de, dw, Kharadron ect.

Most of my armies tend to stick around the 9-10K mark.

At point I have all of the units I like and I gave multiples of most of them to make them actually useful in a list.
