I put wyvern but that's mainly because I don't have a basilisk yet

“Because we couldn’t be trusted. The Emperor needed a weapon that would never obey its own desires before those of the Imperium. He needed a weapon that would never bite the hand that feeds. The World Eaters were not that weapon. We’ve all drawn blades purely for the sake of shedding blood, and we’ve all felt the exultation of winning a war that never even needed to happen. We are not the tame, reliable pets that the Emperor wanted. The Wolves obey, when we would not. The Wolves can be trusted, when we never could. They have a discipline we lack, because their passions are not aflame with the Butcher’s Nails buzzing in the back of their skulls.
The Wolves will always come to heel when called. In that regard, it is a mystery why they name themselves wolves. They are tame, collared by the Emperor, obeying his every whim. But a wolf doesn’t behave that way. Only a dog does.
That is why we are the Eaters of Worlds, and the War Hounds no longer."

Are manticores, mortar squads and earthshaker platforms not options?
I don't think basilisks and wyverns compare well as they have different targets - wyverns kill low armour hordes and basilisks are happier killing tanks and elite infantry.

Wyverns and Manticores are where it's at.
I wouldn't bother much with the Basilisk itself. A Manticore's bad day is still better than a Basilisk's good day.

Guardsmen, hear me! Cadia may lie in ruin, but her proud people do not! For each brother and sister who gave their lives to Him as martyrs, we will reap a vengeance fiftyfold! Cadia may be no more, but will never be forgotten; our foes shall tremble in fear at the name, for their doom shall come from the barrels of Cadian guns, fired by Cadian hands! Forward, for vengeance and retribution, in His name and the names of our fallen comrades! |

I don't see a reason to take Wyverns while Mortars exist, unless you don't own any mortars, so I voted Basilisk.

I have used Wyverns very effectively. Indirect, with a master of Ordinance and their re-roll wounds they can force a lot of armor rolls from your opponent, and he has to dedicate a unit to come get them, maybe disrupting his alpha/deep strike as a bonus. I always try to place them in cover, away from the rest of my army, as a semi-distraction that forces more elite armies to split their units. That plays into the strategy of my fast assault army.
By the way, so far, they have proven effective as an anti-sniper unit. Most sniper units are small (5 scouts, etc) and forcing lots of saves can take them down. Again, not claiming uber, just another reason opponent has to deal with them.
I do have to agree with earlier posters. The wyvern is more effective against hordes, but CAN still hurt elite units. For me the basilisk is useless against large units and so I go with the mortar tank. Cost wise you can get the same effect cheaper, but my theme is a mobile reaction force so I like the vehicle chassis.

I never forget the Dakka unit scale is binary: Units are either OP or Garbage. |

I've had the opposite problem, my Wyverns are just not causing enough wounds to even make those extra rolls, where my Basilisk is guaranteed to get a decent amount of shots with high Str/ AP and can easily take out marines in cover, primaris, and vehicles. They are no Manticore but they also cost a lot less too.
