Hey everyone so i'm kinda new to space wolves. I played like one or two games of 7th but just decided to wait till 8th came out. i know space wolves are an assault army but i was wondering how well they do against other assault armies vs how well they do against more shooty armies.

I have been running my Space Wolves a lot in 8th edition and I have done well with them. My impression is that they are one of the better Index lists. While they lack tricks like Conscript-spam IG, their signature units are pretty solid. Grey Hunters are better than Tactical squads and Long Fangs are better than Devastators since they can bring their own rerolls without needing an HQ to babysit. Several special characters are strong, particularly Bjorn and Njal. Wolf Guard are very flexible which can open some interesting builds.

Thunderwolf Cavalry has been toned down somewhat from 7th edition but is still a strong assault unit. Wolves also get access to most regular SM units (with a few exceptions) and Razorbacks with assault cannons are always a good bet in 8th.

So far I have been running a largely mechanised force based around Grey Hunters in transports, supported by Long Fangs and backed up by some CC muscle in the shape of Bjorn. I have found they are flexible enough to tackle most opponents. Against CC armies, they have enough firepower to hang back and whittle the enemy down as they advance before finishing them off with a counter-charge. Against shooty armies, they are fast enough to get in close and hit the enemy while psychic powers like Tempests Wrath and Stormcaller mitigate enemy shooting.

Having said that, I have not played any really nasty shooty armies yet like DE Darklance-spam or Guilliman's Razorback carpark. Against most lists, you should do well. Against an army that has its codex and is optimised for a particular strategy, you might find it harder but the same is true for everyone.

I stand between the darkness and the light. Between the candle and the star.
