I have seen a few other discussions on dakka and other sites touching on this ambiguity, but no clear answers. I am curious how the community has been playing Warp Talons. They have one value, listed right under where it says "wargear not included." They also come stock with a pair of lightning claws, which are worth almost as much as the model itself in points. The rules seem to clearly indicate that stock wargear is still purchased additionally, but it seems like most folks are only paying for voluntary wargear upgrades. The costs of some units seem to take this into account, while others are either not calculating things the same way or else are just rather overcosted. Warp Talons have always been overcosted, and the price of the model plus the talons seems about in line with 7th edition, but everybody was talking them up to be the new 8th edition hotness. Paying for model + wargear, and no ability to take an icon, I have a hard time understanding how they are vastly improved with, what? A 27% chance of landing a 8 inch charge out of deepstrike?

If you are playing a matched play game, or a game that uses a points limit, you can use the following lists to determine the
total points cost of your army. Simply add together the points costs of all your models and the wargear they are armed with to
determine your army’s total points value.

- Points Value, every codex shall have one

Unless a Rule grants them permission to ignore the above set of instructions, we add the cost of Model and Weapon together.

Added:
The cost of a Warp Talon is only 2 points more then a standard Space Marine.
It has greater Movement rates, access to Fly, an Unique Keyword, ability to "Deep Strike," an Invulnerability save....
Why should this Model be granted free Wargear too?

8th made it so I can no longer sway Tau onto the side of Chaos, but they will eventually turn aside from their idea of the Greater Good to embrace the Greatest of pleasures.

Also, they'd need a 9" charge out of reserves, since they have to deploy more than 9" away.

Warp Time is your friend.

It's because of their ability to combo very well for an untouchable alpha-strike, along with having their cost reduced since the 6th edition codex. 135 for a unit of 5, you pay for the claws. If you're playing with anyone who does otherwise, feel free to add 60 points to your army as a tax on their cheating.

Sorcerer Lord with Jump Pack (warptime & prescience), or Daemon Prince with wings (warptime) unit of Warp Talons. They have a 12" move. They can arrive from reserves without scatter. That isn't a 27% chance of an 8" charge. That's a 100% chance of an auto-charge from 1", that is immune to overwatch fire, with a total of 11 attacks, with rerolls to hit and to wound on -2 AP weapons. Tack on a free Legion Trait and pay for some stratagems if you need even more death.

That's the hotness they bring.

I have fielded them once before and that made them an almost auto include (I paid for the lightning claws)

Deep strike with a sorcerer in terminator armour (additional raptors for a bit of screening), warp time - wiped out a 10 man squad of IG with the extra roles from death to the false emperor, next turn got in a charge on a devastators squad ( 3' consolidate towards them from previous combat 12' move easy charge) wiped them out on the next turn.

I started to feel a bit bad that they were causing so much carnage.

I might try the sorcerer with Diabolic strength on them next time to try to have a go at some tanks 16 hit dice + DttFE, still 5's to wound but -2 AP will help making what wounds do go through stick and tying up a tank in melee whilst the rest of the marines advance, or while the Demon prince fly's over!!

Plus the models are sweet!

Diabolic Strength applies to a single model, just FYI.

Good Point, Well Made!

I'll stick to casting it onto the Demon Prince, I think I should still leave him with Warp time and the sorcerer with Diabolic strength to cast on him when he gets in range.
