I just got the Start Collecting Tyranid box and am sort of wanting to do a more melee focused army and don't really know where to go from there, or even if that's a viable option.

My main question at the moment is should I use the kit to make a Hive Tyrant or go with the Swarmlord?

Any other tips or advice would be really appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

The Swarmlord is excellent right now; it's ability to let a unit double move is one of the best in the game. I would definitely recommend starting off with him.

My friend collects tyranids, and recently got a swarmlord. Awesome in game. He modelled him using the flying hive tyrants tail so it looks like he is jumping at you swords swinging! So cool

It honestly depends on your list.

The SL is really great, but expensive. He really isn't worth it unless you are building a list around him. I would say you need 1/3rd of your list working directly as support for and working with the swarmlord.

Hive tyrants on the other hand are not as durable as they used to be but are still pretty nice, Especially if you bring multiples. Design them how you want for the job they will do. Melee tryants are great front line synapse and can chew through a lot of enemies.

HTs built for shooting can drop a lot of dakka, but keep in mind they have more than 10 wounds so they can be targetted.

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

Magnetise it. Nids change so much over time and editions that they basically demand it.

Also the nid codex is coming out soon (like next month) and the Swarmlord might end up not being great.

This. Magnetizing arms on tyrant is one of the easiest to do - you can then change each game as well while you try them yourself.
