On a Canoptek Spyder's Waiting List

Okay so, next army is up for consideration and I cannot make my mind up, like the idea of both of them, just cannot seem to make my mind up, was wondering if people could describe how happy they are with their choice of the above to help me make my mind up, not so fussed about lists or anything as I've made lists for both armies, just don't know which to go for and unfortunately both is not an option

I am using the CSM codex and can only speak good things about it. It's full of character, flavour and amazing backstory about each unit and even the heresy.
It's really solid power level wise and you have SO many good options! Great book

It might be best waiting until the GSC codex comes out and that could be a while, at the moment Chaos are flavour of the month, Deathguard anyway

I've been playing a while, my first model was a lead marine and my first White Dwarf was bound with staples |

purely from a rules standpoint, atm Chaos is one of the big dogs because it's got its codex and can use chapter tactics, relics etc. and GSC is arguably the worst faction in the game all-round.
But, and this is important and a concept I try to instill in all my new players: You should never fully base a decision on rules. Armies based on rules get sold when the new edition drops/new codex/new FAQ/whatever. We've already seen thousands of dollars worth of bikes and jetbikes disappear into thin air, not to mention hundreds of dollars of stormravens, Dark Eldar razorwings, eldar flyers, Tau riptides, wraithknights, all popping in and out of lists like popcorn as the rules change. And yes, we have seen several people leave the game entirely because the top 5% list they had before dropped down to below average with the edition change.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"
"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"
"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"
"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!" |

I'd go CSM because they can do everything that GSC can do and more.
Want Imperial Guard equivilent? We got renegades.
Want some really nasty first turn charges with hundreds of attacks? We got Zerkers.
Want to infiltrate your army into your opponants face? We got Alpha Legion.
Chaos currently have every 40k tactic cornered IMO.

I love the GSC aesthetic and I think that's an important part of any army. In my mind, the most important one. They're also going to get a codex at some point in the future, who knows how awesome they'll be by then. And you can ally them with Tyranids... who knows what that will mean when they both have their codex, right?
GSC is the unscratched scratcher lottery ticket. They might be awesome!
But GSC is expensive as hell to collect. They're an army of middle-range troops, about the same power level per head as Ad Mech (stronger than a Guardsman, considerably weaker than a Marine.) and yet they have some insanely expensive troops boxes.
Personally, I like the GSC more, based only on aesthetic. If you like them both the same, go Chaos. It makes a lot of sense.
