What size table do people play on? I got a game in at the GW the other day, but they only had one 4x8 and we had to split it with another pair of folks. At home we play on a 4x4 generally. I used to play at an FLGS that had 4x6 as a standard size.

4x6 is the official size, our local has a 4x8 for bigger games, a 4x8 is also nice b.c you can still play 4x6 on it and have table space for dead models without leaving the table, or rules books, tape, dies etc..

I play on a 6x4 though I'd prefer to have and use a 4x8, particularly for games of 40K (which has way too many damn models).

4x 6' here. We play smaller 1k on 4x4, but anything over 1500 is 4x6. I have 3 tables so can place them together for larger games. I find anything smaller than 4x6 for 2k armies far too limiting and destroys any tactics besides sit on edge and shoot or rush into combat.

i prefer a 4x8 table but play on 4x6 of it. So much easier for books, dice, dead figures.

My son and I switch between 4X6 and 4X4, prefer the 4X6 even though we're only using 1000 points - gives us space to maneuver and the long range guns of my Tau some closing distance before he mauls me with his Chaos or Necron army.

Used to be that 4x8 was standard.
That was back when things moved slower, no flyers, and we ued fewer mode!s overall too!
Then the game moved to 4x6...
Now things are moving too fast for that IMHO.
I am not voting, as I think that table size should be points based, something like 4x4 up to 750, 4x6 up to 12-1500, and 4x8 after that...

2K on 4x6 is my standard but my terrain is modular and I can setup anything up to a 4x12 (although that's a bit cramped around the table)

we have table pieces cut to 6x4.
Then we put 2 or 3 together depending on the game size and player count
so 6x8 or 6x12 is our norm.
I will add another 6x4 to make a 6x18 when we have 4vs4 on a regular basis

IMO 6x4 at 2000 points is the best option available.
At this size, the game works best. 4x4 (with >1000 points) gives units that don't need LOS to shoot to cover the whole board (a lot of these units have 36"-48" weapons range) and makes consolidating after melee too strong.
8x4 at 2000 maybe favors long range shooting but is still fine balance wise, BUT 8' is so wide it's impractical.
When the weather was nice, we played in a friend's garden, and even there, 8' was problematic.
My group has 4 boards, 2 6x4 and 2 4x4, so we need a huge table to play on a 8x4 board so those 2 small boards don't fall over/flip when you touch them. We probably won't be able to use them during winter either.
We don't like 2v2 and only play 1500+ points, so we play on 3 boards most of the time and I would love it, if the rules were scalable so 4x4 would be enough (Maybe, balancewise, 2D3" would be more balanced for charge rolls if all distances were just halfed as the variance is not that high).
I also play X-Wing and the board size is one of the biggest advantages x_Wing has over 40k.

My local shop has 4x8 tables, but we pretty much always stage our armies on 2x2 tiles that we place at the end of the table, cutting it down to 4x6.
When we want something bigger, the problem seems to be the 4' side, not the 6' side. 6x6 or 6x8 would be nice, except that it's slightly too deep for some people to reach the center easily.

We've only played <1000 pt games so far in my group. 4'x4' for us. When we hit 1250+ we will switch to 4'x6'.

4'x6'. We have that area marked out on a 5'x10' table, and expand to the bigger table when doing very large games.

4x8 because when I built my table years ago that was the official size you should play on. Weapons with 72" range don't mean anything on a 4x4 table, and 4x8 with the proper amount of terrain can lead to drastically different games than 4x6 or 4x4 could.
Plus 4x8 does not mean you have to always use the whole table, but it is there if you want to use it.
