Hi All,

This may well be a daft question but here goes. When I am painting my models (and to be fair cosplay things) i always use Citadel Chaos black as my base coat and dry brush the desired colour on there, i'm happy with the results but my question is, what other black spray's do people use to base coat their models before dry brushing?

I always stick to citadel because i know the results but it can also be expensive, are there other alternatives or should I just stick with what i know?

Thanks,

James

Literally any other black flat spray paint is just as good as the GW crap. Krylon ultra flat black is my favorite, but Rustoleum and Quick Color also work well.

The cheapest black paint on the shelf.
Warm it up.
Don't paint in the dry winter cold from two feet away.

That said, I tend to base dark then drybrush white/ivory then add colors.

I just use a bog standard matt black primer from a local auto-parts shop (Halfords in the UK). I always give it a quick basecoat in thinned black paint afterwards (Abaddon Black or Vallejo depending on what I have in at the time). The thinned basecoat seems to make any further painting easier to work with, especially when drybrushing with metallics over the top.

Any cheap flat finish color will work. You can experiment with other colors beyond black, especially if you want the color to pop a bit more.
