Hi guys.

After 20+ years of non-tabletop gaming I am to return. I am getting Blood Bowl and I will be getting the £95 Wh40k box set in a week or so. Anyway. I have a question and possibly some critique from you all. I would like to construct the 2nd Ultra Marine company in full, over time as it would cost too much all in one go. Considering the figure I would get in the big box set what other sets/ figures would I need? I have not got the rule book yet as it will be in the box when I get it but I have seen images of pages on internet an have seen the illustrated 2nd company pages and tried to build it via the GW online shop but I am not 100% sure I was correct in the choices. If at all possible, minus the figures in the box as I would already have then, what would I need to create this company? What HQ figs, what squads do I need to buy. It would be nice to create as close to the illustrated article as posible. If it's not, then alternatives are ok of course.

If this is the wrong forum then I do apologise, move if need be.

look forward to your replies.

First don't buy direct from gw look at sites like darksphere, gifts for geeks places like that offer up to 20% off retail you'll get the starter for £73 or so.

Look at the burning of prospero box set and betrayal at calth those would give you 60 basic marines two five man terminator squads a dreadnought and some characters for around £150 that's a genuine bargin .

Being a legion from the heresy they'd still have all those types of armour lore wise.

elementgames is another shop to hold up next to DarkSphere, as they're both fantastic UK shops for discounted GW.

The third big one is Wayland Games, and while I've heard they've gotten better, I stopped buying from them long ago, as they were absolutely terrible. I had an order that took them 4 months to fill, after having promised they did have it in stock at the time of order, and it wasn't their first order that was multiple months out before I got it. One was for some admech objective cards that were only sold for a short time, and they only told me they couldn't fulfil after it wasn't on the GW shop anymore. Final straw there.

So, they exist, but I'd stick to the other two, or even Firestorm Games which I've heard nothing bad about.

I assume the Primaris are the newer Marines in the game now. I see there are mk iii and mk iv still for sale. Can these older models still be used to make the 2nd company? Or does it not matter what version is used?

The primaris marines have different rules to regular marines and are formed into different squad types.

All of the non-primaris armour marks are essentially identical - they only differ cosmetically.

Ok thanks for that. So to cut the cost down I could just make my own chapter and company up go with an army of my own design and making. I won't be playing hardcore just more a casual gamer with the wife and a friend or two who will have an interest. Maybe I was aiming to high to start off.

As I have not got the game/rule book yet, when I make an army up to play with are there any rules that I HAVE to abide by, such as you can only field one dreadnought or one dropship for example or can I just deploy whatever I want along with my friend, same for him/her too.

your mind

Betrayal at Calth seems to be the box to buy, for marines.
Personally, I can't stand the new Primaris marines.
I started on them lukewarm.
That has changed as the heresy has sunk in...
Plus, no beaks, too smooth and shiny, not enough of the old gothic lines... Too Stormcaste Eternal for my tastes. If you don't understand that reference, then you will. Too comic-book noble-bright shiny and new. Just, not for me.
Besides that, the new box would be OK if you wanted to collect Nurgle marines.
Otherwise, the Betrayal at Calth set OR simply look on eBay for old collections, including bits boxes and so on, that is where I would go with it.
The Betrayal box looks like it can be had in the UK for 80pounds, maybe less.
I like those models more than the numarines, in every way - just my opinion I guess.
Anyways, that and a landraider would get me started on marines.

The rule book gives 3 ways to play, Matched, Narative and Open Play. Open is literally put what ever you want down on table. I'd recommend getting the Open Play cards as well for that as it lets you set up a scenario.

To make quick generalisations for the three game types (as in, they're sort of correct, but people could tut at it because people like to do that) it goes like this:

Open Play: Place anything you own on the table and roll some dice. The Open Play Cards lend it a semblance of structure, enough that it's enjoyable.

Narrative Play: Made mostly to re-enact battles from "history" or scenarios you've dreamed up, like a last stand against a Tyranid swarm or something. Bit more structure, but still pretty open ended.

Matched Play: The type you'll find in tournaments (and the kind most experienced players will be playing.)

Got to go to work in a min but I shall just leave this question here,.

the Betrayal of Calth seems a good deal. nice models and like jeff White mentioned above, better than the neat clean Primaris. You guys think 2 copies of Betrayal at Calth plus the new Wh40k rule book will be a good start or leave the rule book out as I would imagine the box set of Calth comes with rules/instructions etc? Two good size armies and 2 dreads by the looks of things. Maybe add a vehicle of some sorts to each army. This a good idea and start?

Betrayal At Calth is a board game, it doesn't come with the full 40k rules - you'll want them. And the space marines codex.

Having said that it is a really good board game and there is at least one scenario that requires two sets, so don' t forget to play it as well! It really is win-win-win!

If you want the current second company you might want to double check how many primaris squads they have. Ultramarines are guaranteed to have changed their company layout as primaris came out. I currently have an entire space marine company of ultramarines, but I have no primaris so it's not the newest version. I dont think i'll ever get primaris either.

+1 to getting Betrayal at Calth. I'd look at Burning of Prospero as well, but if you don't want Sisters of Silence, Custodes, or the characters, you might be better off getting the Marines and Terminators from that box off of eBay. Both of the Mk III armor Marines and the Tartaros Terminators seem to be most consistently the cheapest out of all Marine options to buy on there (though I've seen the occasional 1st-3rd edition Terminators for dirt cheap too...)

Regarding the Betrayal at Calth, can ALL the figures in that box be used together in the same army? If I was to buy two boxes (to make two equal armies to make our games level for us considering we are starting out from new so to speak) could i make one of them Ultramarines and the other Blood angels or another chapter? Or are there models in there that certain chapters can't or don't have.?

Well, Marines are Marines regardless of the Mk of armor, at least in game, and the "Kurtha Sedd" model is a great Chaplain model. AFAIK, both can take Cataphractii Terminators and a Captain in each can be equipped with Cataphractii armor. If the Blood Angels for some reason can't, you can always use them as "counts as" regular Terminators if you're ok with that.

Ok thanks for that reply. I will more than likely make up my own chapter (currently in the process) so I don't think I will be limited much as to what I ca and can't have. Maybe I will but once I get the ball rolling we shall see
